Captains Q&A

Hear from new captains Juliet Zhang and River Hart on their fall semester.

MINNEAPOLIS- As an atypical fall for the Golden Gophers creeps by, the two new team co-captains are staying prepared and pushing through their fall classes. Gopher Sports sits down with Juliet Zhang and River Hart to find out how the first two months of the school year have been going.

Senior Juliet Zhang has been spending the first couple months of the semester in Canada and discusses how it has been going.

GopherSports: How are you staying prepared and maintaining team chemistry so far?

Juliet Zhang: Since I am currently in Vancouver and doing online classes, the most important aspect for me is to stay up to date on my coursework and make sure I am not missing anything. In terms of tennis, I am maintaining my training at least 4-5 times a week. I think our team chemistry is great and our team is doing really well with communication. We chat and update each other in our team group chat. We also make sure to reach out to each other often.

GS: What has been your favorite class so far?

JZ: My favorite class so far has been leadership. I am looking forward to use the information I learn from the class towards perfecting our team chemistry.

GS: What was a hobby you picked up during quarantine?

JZ: Definitely baking. One of my classes is about food nutrients and it has sparked my interest in food.

GS: What is your favorite food to eat at home?

JZ: Dim-sum, for sure. I love Chinese food.

GS: Who is the funniest on the team?

JZ: I think all of them have a great sense of humor and they never fail to make me laugh!

Senior River Hart is in her fourth and final year in Maroon & Gold. She has been on campus since early September practicing with the team.

GopherSports: How are you staying prepared and maintaining team chemistry so far?

River Hart: We are all making sure to work as hard as we can each practice because we know they are limited. Maintaining chemistry has been super important to us this season. I think maximizing our time at practice together will be the best way to keep chemistry up. Given the current situation, it is very hard to hang out and do the things we normally would. Keeping open communication and enjoying the time together on the court will be key.

GS: What has been your favorite class so far?

RH: My favorite class this semester is about the safety of food. It's interesting to see how our food system works.

GS: What was a hobby you picked up during quarantine?

RH: Playing the piano!

GS: What is your favorite food to eat at home?

RH: My favorite thing to eat when I go home is my mom's lasagna. She makes great Italian food.

GS: Who is the funniest on the team?

RH: I honestly find everyone on our team very funny so its hard for me to pick someone. Dalila [Said] always manages to put a smile on my face during practice!
