The Minnesota men's gymnastics team took on Nebraska and Army on Saturday afternoon and came away with a second place finish.
While the Gophers weren't able to secure the team win, there was still plenty to be proud of for Minnesota on the day. Freshman Donte McKinney earned his second high bar title in as many weeks, junior Colton Dee grabbed the gold on rings and there were 13 new career highs recorded by Gophers.
Minnesota also earned seven podium finishes during the meet, including a clean sweep of the top three spots on high bar.
Notable
Despite missing two key all-arounders in Shane Wiskus and Mike Moran and a pair of freshmen, Minnesota was able to post its best score of the season (404.700) and recorded new highs on pommel horse, rings, vault and high bar.
Quotable
"A lot of guys had the chance to step up and into roles that they may not have otherwise had a chance to play into, so I was really pleased with that," head coach Mike Burns said. "Overall I think it was a great affair. Highest score of the year, really good hit percentage. Even though we lost, the effort that these guys put forth was really solid."
Pommel Horse
The Gophers got a solid start to their day on pommel horse and set a new season high of 64.950. Junior Russell Johnson led the way for Minnesota with a career high mark of 13.350 for fourth place. Sophomore Jake Sawyer closely followed in fifth with a 13.200, blowing his previous high away by 1.5 points. McKinney was the Gophers' next-best finisher with a score of 13.000 for eighth place.
Rings
Minnesota kept its momentum heading into the second rotation, where they scored a season record of 67.700. Dee set the tone with a personal best 14.050 for the event title. Johnson earned his second career high on the day on rings, 13.650 for third place. Sophomore Eric Nakamura also added a personal best score of 13.450 for fifth.
Floor
Sophomore Danny Yoon was Minnesota's best finisher on floor with a career-high score of 13.600 for seventh place, which he shared with Dee. Sophomore Ben Eyles scored a career-high mark of 13.350 for 11th place for the Gophers.
Parallel Bars
The Gophers earned their second-highest score of the season on parallel bars, 68.300. Senior captain Timmy Kutyla led Minnesota with a new career best of 14.200 to tie for second place. Sophomore David Pochinka came in fifth with a score of 13.850, while Dee (13.450) and Johnson (13.200) again recorded new PRs.
High Bar
Minnesota earned its season best and the top score of the meet on high bar with a 67.450. Three Gophers broke the 14 mark on the event to sweep to podium: McKinney (14.100), Pochinka (14.050) and Kutyla (14.000). McKinney and Kutyla earned career highs while Pochinka's score was a season best.
Vault
The Gophers closed the day on vault and added yet another season best score, 71.050. Dee had his career best, 14.500, to tie for second. McKinney continued his solid run on the event with a score of 14.300 for fifth and fellow freshman Valen Watrous earned a 14.150 for seventh.
