Minnesota Set to Host Memphis and Missouri
2/19/2020 11:26:00 AM | Tennis
Looking to seek redemption this weekend from last season's fall outs, the University of Minnesota women's tennis team is set to host the University of Memphis and the University of Missouri at Baseline Tennis Center from Feb. 21-23 this weekend. Last year the Gophers trekked to Memphis, Tenn., and fell to Memphis 6-1 and Missouri 4-3 in a pair of tight matches.
"We are looking forward to this weekend and the opportunity to host Memphis and Missouri at home," said head coach Catrina Thompson. "We know we have two tough matches ahead of us but the team has been practicing hard and will be ready to go this weekend."
ABOUT THE GOPHERS
Last weekend, Minnesota went on to defeat the Drake Bulldogs and South Dakota Coyotes 7-0. The Gophers earned their third home sweep and seventh consecutive win. This is the longest streak they have had since 2012; the team went on to earn nine wins in a row, which ended against a No. 16 Michigan team. This weekend will be a challenge for the Maroon and Gold, facing two tough opponents they have competed fiercely with in previous seasons.
DOUBLE-DOUBLE
The duet of Ekin Ercetin and Dalila Said have stepped up to the plate in their first year as Gophers. Following a loss against a top ranked UCLA pair, the duo has gone on to win five straight matches this season. Currently in the number two doubles spot, they lead doubles with a record of 5-1.
ABOUT THE MEMPHIS TIGERS
This will be the fourth meeting for the Gophers and Tigers. Memphis leads the series over the Gophers 2-1, with each previous match coming down to the wire. Currently 4-3 on the season they will head into this weekend with a three game win streak. The Tigers are led by Junior Laura Bente who has notched four singles wins so far this year. Paired with teammate Aran Teixido Garcia for doubles, they have stacked up two wins with one match left unfinished.
ABOUT THE MIZZOU TIGERS
The Tigers and Gophers have a history that dates back all the way to 2000. In the last 20 years, they have met 12 times, with Missouri clinching seven wins. Leading the Tigers are seniors Serena Nash and Gabrielle Golden, who were previously ranked at No. 58 in doubles by the ITA (Intercollegiate Tennis Association). Together, they downed Kansas State's No. 54 ranked tandem, 6-3 and ending a match unfinished leading 5-3 against a No. 10 ranked Old Dominion pair.
