MINNEAPOLIS – Minnesota's Jasmine Powell has been named the Big Ten Freshman of the Week for a second time this season, the conference announced Monday.
The Detroit, Mich., native averaged 18.0 points, 3.0 rebounds, 1.5 assists and 1.5 steals per game last week for Minnesota.
In a 66-54 loss last Monday at Michigan State, Powell continued her stellar play with a team-high 15 points. She added four rebounds, two steals and an assist.
Powell was then one of four Golden Gophers in double figures in a 75-69 setback against No. 24 Indiana Saturday. She scored a team-high 21 points, her 10th straight game in double figures and her fourth time reaching 20 or more points in the last five contests. Fifteen of her 21 points came in the first half, including 10 in the first quarter alone. She was 3-of-5 from 3-point range, tying a career high for 3's made.
With Powell taking home Freshman of the Week honors on Feb. 3 and fellow freshman Sara Scalia winning twice already this year, this is first time in program history that multiple Gophers have won multiple Freshman of the Week accolades in one season since the award was introduced in 2009-10. Powell is one of seven players in Gophers history with two or more Freshman of the Week accolades.
On the season, Powell is averaging 12.0 points, 2.9 rebounds, 2.9 assists and 1.4 steals per game. She leads all Big Ten freshmen in scoring and free throw percentage (.772), is second in steals per game and ranks third in assists per contest.
