Scalia Named B1G Freshman of the Week a Second Time

MINNEAPOLIS – For the second time this season, Minnesota guard Sara Scalia has been named the Big Ten Freshman of the Week, the conference announced Monday.Â
Scalia, who is sharing Freshman of the Week honors with Indiana's Mackenzie Holmes, averaged 18.0 points, 6.5 rebounds, 2.0 assists and 1.5 steals as Minnesota went 1-1 last week. She shot 46.2 percent on field goals, 43.8 percent on 3-pointers and made all five attempts at the free throw line.
The Stillwater, Minn., native was one of three in double figures for the Gophers in a 76-75 loss to No. 22 Iowa Thursday night. She recorded the first double-double of her career with 18 points and a career-high 10 rebounds. She was 6-of-12 from the floor and 4-of-8 on 3-pointers, one off her career high for 3's made in game. Playing all 40 minutes, she added two steals and an assist.
Scalia was then one of five Gophers with 10 or more points Sunday in a 72-59 win in West Lafayette that snapped a five-game losing streak. Scalia led the way with 18 points for the second straight contest. She hit three 3-pointers and added three rebounds and three assists. Six of Scalia's points came during Minnesota's 19-0 run in the second half that turned a 43-43 tie into a 62-43 lead for the Gophers.
Since the Big Ten first started awarding Freshman of the Week honors during the 2009-10 season, Scalia is now just the sixth player from Minnesota to earn the recognition more than once, also doing so on Dec. 2. She joins Amanda Zahui B. (7), Destiny Pitts (7), Rachel Banham (5), Carlie Wagner (2) and Kayla Hirt (2) in the exclusive club.
On the season, Scalia is averaging 11.5 points, 4.7 rebounds, 2.0 3-pointers, 1.6 steals and 1.5 assists per game.
