Gophers Hit the Road for Lone Match in Colorado

2/26/2020 2:43:00 PM | Tennis

The University of Minnesota women's tennis team hits the road this weekend for a lone match on Sunday March 1, 2020 against the University of Colorado. This will be the third time this year the Gophers face a PAC-12 rival, as they are 0-2 against the conference. Hoping to make a mark in the win category, this is the seventh contest between the Gophers and Buffaloes, while Colorado leads the series 5-1.

The last time the Gophers and Buffaloes met was almost 20 years ago in Westminister, Colo., during the 2002 season. Capitalizing on their home court advantage, Colorado clinched the 4-3 win over Minnesota in a close, hard fought battle.

"The team has been playing confidently and getting better with each match we play," said head coach Catrina Thompson. "Playing Colorado on the road and in altitude will be a test for us, but we are looking forward to the opportunity and the chance to compete against another quality team this weekend."

ABOUT THE GOPHERS
Last weekend, the Gophers came out big by earning their fourth weekend sweep, clinching redemption victories over Memphis and Missouri. Prior to the 2020 season, Minnesota has come up short to both teams the past two years in close games. With their third road match of the season, the Gophers will head into this weekend on a nine game win streak.

NINE STRAIGHT
Not only has it been a successful season for the Gophers, it has been a historical one as well. Catrina Thompson is the third coach in Minnesota women's tennis history to earn nine wins in a row. Thompson is in her third year with the Gophers, and has notched a record of 38-15.

Ellie Peden was the first to achieve this record back in 1977-78 when the team went on to win 11 straight games. The second was Martin Novak, who led the team to go on to win nine in a row during the 1996-97, 1999-00 and 2002-03. During his 1999-00 run, Novak helped the Gophers go undefeated for 12 matchups.

A TANDEM TO WATCH
Sitting in the No. 3 doubles spot are juniors Juliet Zhang and River Hart. So far during the 2019-20 slate, they have accumulated a record of 5-1 with wins over Marquette, Drake, Memphis and Missouri. The duo has gone undefeated in their last four matches.

Most notably, they helped launch the Maroon and Gold to win over Missouri by clinching the doubles point. Their victory put Minnesota on the board 1-0 heading into singles play, which contributed greatly.

ABOUT THE BUFFALOES
So far this season, the University of Colorado is 7-3 with a two game win streak. They have won four of their last seven matchups, with three of the wins on their home turf. Last weekend, they downed Wyoming 6-1 and the weekend prior to that, they won 4-3 over fellow Big Ten foe, Iowa.

The Buffaloes are led by senior Monica Malinen and sophomore Sara Nyer. The duo is currently ranked #49 by the ITA (Intercollegiate Tennis Association) and are 2-2 against ranked opponents with a 7-6 record on the season.
