Gophers Fall in Heart Breaker to Buffaloes

3/1/2020 4:52:00 PM | Tennis

BOULDER -  The University of Minnesota women's tennis team came up short in a non conference match on Sunday against Colorado with a final score of 4-1.

The Buffaloes' record improves to 8-4 while the Gophers drop to 10-5. Despite this loss, head coach Catrina Thompson is the third coach in Minnesota women's tennis history to go on a nine game win streak.

DOUBLES
The courts would not be in favor of the Maroon and Gold during the doubles portion of Sunday's match. The Buffaloes would clinch the point in two quick matches in the No. 1 and 2 spots. Going unfinished, juniors River Hart and Juliet Zhang ended their match 5-5.

SINGLES
Singles play would be a tough battle for the Gophers, as only one was able to come out on top over Colorado. Unable to finish off their matches, Minnesota battled hard early on. Reappearing to the No. 2 spot, Dalila Said clinched a 6-1, 6-3 win over Antonia Belzert.

NOTABLE
Catrina Thompson is the third coach in Minnesota women's tennis history to earn nine wins in a row. Despite today's loss, she made her mark in the history books by following in the footsteps of Ellie Peden and Martin Novak.

QUOTABLE
"We had our opportunities today in both singles and doubles, but overall Colorado is a tough team," said head coach Catrina Thompson." The altitude and conditions are some of the toughest in the country and it will only make us stronger as we move forward into conference play. Dalila led the way for us and the girls battled throughout the match but unfortunately, we came up short."

UP NEXT
The Gophers will be back at Baseline Tennis Center next weekend to faceoff against Big Ten opponents Rutgers on Friday at 2:00p.m. and Wisconsin on Sunday at 10:00a.m.
