Gophers Host Border Battle Against Iowa

The No. 6 University of Minnesota Women's Gymnastics team returns to Maturi Pavilion for their second home meet of the season. The Gophers host the Iowa Hawkeyes at 6 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 8. The meet will be available on BTN +.

Last Time Out
Minnesota recorded their fourth-highest team score in program history this past weekend with a score of 197.400. This was the first time the Gophers have eclipsed 197 this season.

The Maroon and Gold scored above 49 on every event, with their highest score coming on beam with a 49.600.

For the second time this season, the Gophers swept the podium on beam. Lexy Ramler finished first with a 9.950, while Ona Loper, Tiarre Sales and Ivy Lu tied for second with 9.925. 

For the second week in a row, Minnesota secured the top three spots on floor. Loper, Paige Williams and Halle Remlinger all tied for first with a 9.900. Remlinger earned her second career podium finish, and first event title, after posting a career-high on the event.

A key player on vault for Minnesota, Loper earned her third straight vault title with a 9.875 this past weekend.

Loper won her second all-around title at Ohio State with a new career-high of 39.550. Ramler came in second with a 39.425. Ramler finished first on bars with a near perfect score, and career-high, of 9.975, receiving one 10 from a judge. Lu went second on bars with a 9.950.

Gophers in the Rankings
The Maroon and Gold moved back up to No. 6 in the week five RoadToNationals rankings. The Gophers are back in the top-10 on three events: Vault (10), bars (9) and beam (1). Minnesota checks in at No. 22 on floor.

After posting a new career-high in the all around (39.550), Loper is tied for No. 9 in the nation, her highest all-around ranking. She remains in the top-10 on vault, tying for ninth.

Ramler comes in at No. 13 in the all-around, first on beam, seventh on bars and is tied for 24th on vault. Sales joins Ramler in the beam rankings at No. 3. The sophomore hasn't scored below a 9.900 on the event this season.

B1G Rankings
Minnesota is No. 1 in the conference with an average team score of 196.763 and a high of 197.400. Michigan comes in at No. 2, averaging 196.692 (high of 197.300), while Nebraska is third, with an average of 196.240 (high of 197.100).

The Gophers are first on beam, second on bars, third on vault and fifth on vault in the Big Ten.

As an individual, Loper is first in the all-around, second on vault and fifth on floor. Ramler is second overall, first on beam and bars, and fifth on vault. Sales ranks second in the conference on beam.

According to the Big Ten standings, based on wins and losses, Minnesota is second with a record of 5-1 overall and 3-0 in the B1G.

Beam Queens
For the second time this season, the Gophers are the top team on beam in the NCAA. Minnesota still holds the highest score on the event in the nation with a 49.700. 

At Ohio State. Minnesota recorded a 49.600 for the third-highest score in program history, with four Gophers scoring a 9.925 or higher. 

Earlier this season, Rambler became the third Gopher in program history to record a perfect 10 on beam at the Rutgers quad meet, joining Ivy Lu and Hanna Nordquist to accomplish this.

In the first home meet of the season, the junior accomplished something no Gopher gymnast had ever done - record a perfect 10 in Maturi Pavilion. She scored her second perfect 10 in two weeks in front of her home crowd. No Gopher has ever recorded multiple perfect 10s, on any event, during their time at Minnesota. Ramler is also the only gymnast in the nation to have multiple perfect 10s on beam so far this season.

Record setting Gophers
The Maroon and Gold had three record-setting performances at Ohio State this past weekend. In their first rotation of the night, the bars team put up a 49.500 on the event to move into second place all-time.

After setting the program record on beam with a 49.700 at the Rutgers Quad meet, Minnesota put up the third-highest beam score in program history at OSU with a 49.600. 

Finally, the Gophers put up the fourth-highest team score in program history with a score of 197.400.

The Gophers' current No. 6 overall ranking, also achieved earlier this season, is their second highest team ranking since coming in at No. 4 in 1998 (Wk. 1) and 2000 (Wk. 21).

In their first meet of the season, Minnesota posted their best opening meet team score since women's gymnastics became an NCAA sport in 1982, recording 196.475 points at Denver. 

B1G Weekly Honors
Loper won her first ever Big Ten Gymnast of the Week award after earning her second career all-around title with a career-high 39.550. The Bluffton, S.C. native has been setting a new career-high in the all-around since the Rutgers quad meet on Jan. 18.

Lu earned her eighth Big Ten Specialist of the Week honor after two podium finishes against OSU.

This is the second Gymnast and Event Specialist of the Week for the Gophers this season. Ramler (gymnast) and Sales (event specialist) earned the honors on Jan. 21.

Scouting Iowa
The University of Iowa is ranked No. 37 overall. They check in at No. 19 on floor, No. 27 on vault, No. 30 on beam and No. 50 on bars. Iowa is ninth in the Big Ten, averaging 194.610, with a high score of 195.675.

The Hawkeyes are seventh in the Big Ten standings with an overall record of 4-4 and 1-2 in the conference.

Lauren Guerin is No. 12 in the NCAA and No. 2 in the Big Ten on floor, averaging 9.905 per meet and a high of 9.950. Guerin is also No. 9 on vault within the conference.

Meet Promotions
The Gophers will be celebrating National Girls and Women in Sport Day (NGWSD) at Maturi Pavilion this Saturday. Gopher Athletics will offer special ticket pricing in conjunction with the nationwide celebration of Girls and Women in Sports. Tickets can be purchased HERE

Minnesota bag tags will be available to the youth at the marketing table, located on the main concourse near the ticket office, while supplies lasts.

It will also be carnival night at the Pav with face painting available. Along with NGWSD and carnival night, the Gophers will be hosting student night, Greek night and Eden Prairie Community Day.
