McHugh Punches Ticket to NCAAs as Top Seed in 100 Breaststroke

MINNEAPOLIS – Sophomore Max McHugh has officially punched his ticket to the 2020 NCAA Men's Swimming & Diving Championships, as psych sheets were released by the NCAA on Wednesday morning.

After posting NCAA 'A' cut times in both the 100 breaststroke and 200 breast, McHugh was a lock to travel to this year's NCAA meet in Indianapolis. That all became a reality today, as the sophomore standout is seeded first in the nation in the 100 breast and third in the 200 breast.

Entering the culmination of championship season, McHugh owns the fastest time in the country of the 2019-20 campaign in the 100 breast. At the Big Ten Conference Championships in late February, McHugh sped his way to a 50.67 time in the 100 breast – a mark that is 0.40 seconds faster than anyone else in the NCAA this year.

In the 200 breast, McHugh's season-best time of 1:51.62 ranks third in the nation behind only Reece Whitley of California and Tommy Cope of Michigan. As a result, McHugh enters this year's NCAA meet as a top-three seed in both breaststroke events.

McHugh is currently one of three male Gophers scheduled to compete at the NCAA meet, although their remains room for the Maroon & Gold to add more student-athletes with today's platform diving yet to take place at the Zone D Championships. Divers Jake Butler and Duncan Lester will join McHugh at NCAAs, having both qualified to compete in the men's 1-meter springboard.

Overall, Minnesota has nine swimmers and divers penciled in for the NCAA Championships. Emily Cook (100 backstroke), Jaclynn Fowler (1-meter, 3-meter), Lindsey Kozelsky (100 breast, 200 breast), Jae Sarkis (3-meter), Tevyn Waddell (100 back, 200 back, 100 butterfly) and Joy Zhu (1-meter, 3-meter) also qualified for the women's NCAA meet.

Action at the 2020 NCAA Championships will take place from March 25-28 in Indianapolis for the men.
