Top Moments: Walker Shines in Overtime

MINNEAPOLIS – As Gopher Hockey prepares for a historic season in 2020-21, GopherSports.com takes one last look back at the 2019-20 campaign with our Top Moments of the Season.Â

As a freshman, Sammy Walker had to wait until the final weekend of the regular season to celebrate his first home sweep at 3M Arena at Mariucci. As a sophomore, Walker wasn't willing to wait that long.Â
The sophomore captain led the Maroon & Gold to a sweep over Niagara in the first series of the year on home ice with Walker sparking Minnesota's weekend with the game winner in the series opener – a 3-2 overtime victory for the Gophers on Oct. 18. Walker would add a goal and an assist on the game winner the following night in a 4-2 win over the Purple Eagles to lock up the sweep. The forward collected seven points (four goals, three assists) in the first four games of the season and went on to lead the Maroon & Gold in scoring for the season with career highs in points (30), goals (11) and assists (19).Â
Moreover, Walker officially factored into the deciding tally in six of Minnesota's 16 wins over the course of the season with three game-winning goals and another three assists on deciding goals. He also scored an unofficial 3-on-3 overtime goal against Notre Dame on Nov. 1 to earn Minnesota the Big Ten bonus point.Â
