Minnesota dropped a 5-0 decision to Wisconsin on the road Friday in game one of this week's WCHA series.
MADISON, Wis. -- The top-ranked Golden Gopher women's hockey team dropped a 5-0 decision to No. 2 Wisconsin on the road at LaBahn Arena on Friday afternoon.
Minnesota (8-2-0, 8-2-0 WCHA) could not solve the Badgers despite putting up 30 shots on goal and having two power-play opportunities. The Gophers surrendered a pair of goals in each of the first two periods and one in the third as Wisconsin (5-2-0, 5-2-0 WCHA) received goals from five different players.
Lauren Bench made 21 saves on 25 shots faced over the first two periods for Minnesota before Makayla Pahl closed out the game for the Maroon & Gold with eight saves on nine shots faced in the third. The Gophers were outshot 34-30 for the game. Kennedy Blair earned the shutout for the Badgers.
Quotable
"Certainly not the result that we were looking for tonight," head coach Brad Frost said. "We really didn't expect that coming into the game here tonight. Our team was a little flat. The first period was somewhat even, but being down 2-0 after one on a couple backdoor goals where we missed some assignments picking up sticks, that third goal was kind-of a back-breaker. Fortunately we get another opportunity here tomorrow, but there's no easy way to spin this one. We did not do what we needed to do and Wisconsin did, and that's credit to them."
Notable
It had been nearly an entire year since the last time Minnesota and Wisconsin met in women's hockey as 355 days passed since the last Border Battle meeting on Jan. 25, 2020. Friday's game marked the 107th all-time meeting between the two teams, and Minnesota now holds a 53-42-12 all-time record against the Badgers.
