Hear from the Gophers track & field captains on what it means to them to be chosen as a captain.
MINNEAPOLIS – The Golden Gopher track & field team captains shared what it means to them to be named captains for this season as the team prepares to compete at Iowa's Larry Wieczorek Invitational this week.
Gopher Sports: What does it mean to you to be chosen as a captain for this year?
Abby Kohut-Jackson: I'm so grateful to be chosen as a captain for this year! Given the unique challenges of competing in a pandemic, I think being a captain this year means helping to keep the team motivated, healthy, and thankful for the opportunities we've got!
Val Larson: It means a lot that my teammates see me as someone they want to lead them. I am honored to represent this team for a second year and lead my teammates to a successful season, just like the captains did for me when I was younger.
Sophie Schmitz: It makes me happy to think about the positive impact that this team has had on me for the past few years, and I feel honored to be in a position where I can share my experience and passion in a way that gives it right back. This year has been challenging, and I know that being a captain and leading a team so strong means a lot for the dynamic of our team from here on out. It's going to be a good 2021.
Mike Herauf: I am extremely honored to be a captain! I have always looked up to our captains in the past and getting chosen to help lead such a great group of athletes is very humbling. The moment I stepped on campus I knew this team was special and I'm so grateful to have the opportunity to make an impact!
Owen Hoeft: It's an honor to be chosen as a captain especially knowing the importance of strong leadership during a year as crazy as this one. I hope to help my teammates get through challenging times to get the best out of themselves by creating a strong sense of team throughout the year.
Teddy Frid: I am very excited for the opportunity and honored. I really enjoy being around everyone on the team and wish I had another four years with this group. I look forward to leading the team come outdoor season where I can compete and until then, being there for them while they go through indoor season and making myself as useful as possible for everyone.
Amira Young: For me, to be chosen as a captain this year means to bring everyone together and help them see what we can accomplish as a team. Also, I believe it's important for us to not take essential things for granted, and enjoy every moment we have as a team.
Elliott Davis: Being chosen as a captain means that I have developed a form of trust and companionship within my team and they trust me to lead them onto success.
Erin Dunning: The past few years I have looked up to so many strong leaders on my team. Their time of being a captain are shoes I hope to fill this year to carry on their legacy. To be chosen captain this year is very humbling, and it is an honor.
