Everything you need to know before the Gophers' first action of the season
MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. - The University of Minnesota Men's Tennis team is set to see its first action of the season tomorrow, kicking off the campaign in the Badger Invitational in Madison, Wis. at the Nielsen Tennis Facility. The tournament will take place over four days, spanning from Thursday Jan. 28th-Sunday Jan. 31st.
It will be the first competition in 325 days for the squad, last competing in a 5-2 victory over the Wisconsin Badgers. Head Coach Geoff Young secured his 200th career victory that same day.
Participants:
The "U" will send eight of its nine student-athletes to the Badger Invitational, pending all positive COVID-19 test results, and will be lead by the team's three seniors - Jackson Allen, Kaleb Dobbs, and Vlad Lobak. Newly-added freshman Gavin Young, who had just recently joined the team, will not make the trip.
Tournament Format:
The Golden Gophers will participate in the tournament, which will take place under the hidden dual format, along with host-school University of Wisconsin, University of Nebraska, and Indiana University. The event schedule has the Maroon & Gold set to compete at the following times:
Thursday, Jan. 28th
6:00pm (tentative) - Doubles vs. Indiana
Friday, Jan. 29th
1:00pm - Doubles vs. Nebraska
1:45pm - Singles vs. Indiana
Saturday, Jan 30th
1:00pm - Doubles vs. Wisconsin
1:45pm - Singles vs. Nebraska
Sunday, Jan. 31st
12:00pm - Singles vs. Wisconsin
Singles will be played best two out of three sets, while doubles will play six-game sets. The Badger Invitational will be an ITA sanctioned event.
