Gophers Sweep Event Titles in Win Over Penn State

The University of Minnesota took down Penn State with a final score of 196.675 to 194.750. The Gophers won each event title on the way to the victory to improve to 2-1 overall and 1-1 in the Big Ten. 

Notable
Four sophomores made their season debuts this afternoon. Mallory LeNeave notched a 9.800 on floor and competed exhibition on bars. Halle Remlinger had strong performance on vault (9.875) and set a new career-high on floor (9.900). Kate Grotenhuis competed for the first time as a Gopher when she had a beautiful exhibition vault. Maya Albertin also competed exhibition on vault. 

Quotable
"I am very pleased with how the team bounced back after the meet at Michigan last weekend," head coach Jenny Hansen said. "We welcomed back some athletes to build new lineups and I think it gave us a little extra pep in our step. It was really fun to have everyone out there and it is great to see our depth. We had different people step in and step up. They did a great job tonight and we are just really excited about where we are at now and where we are going."

"It was super exciting to get back out there," Remlinger said. "I love competing and it was super special to be back at the Pav again because home meets are always so awesome. This team is so special and to get a mid-196 with a fall is crazy. We have so much to show and prove. The team did great tonight and I am very proud."

All-Around
Lexy Ramler won her first all-around title of the season with a 39.675. Ramler won the bars (9.925) and beam (9.950) titles, and tied for the floor title with a 9.925. Ona Loper came in second with a 38.900.

Vault
The Gophers started the afternoon on vault and had a team score of 49.275 on the event. Junior Maddie Quarles won her first event title of the season and posted a 9.900. Ramler, Remlinger and Loper put up a trio of 9.875s and tied for second. Freshmen Mya Hooten and Gianna Gerdes added a 9.750.

Bars
Ramler led the way for the Gophers on bars with a 9.925. Hannah Willlmarth tied a season-high 9.875 for second place. Lexi Montgomery took fifth with a mark of 9.800 and Mya Hooten came in ninth with a 9.725.  Minnesota posted a team score of 48.700.

Beam
The Gophers swept the podium on beam and had a 49.275 team score. Ramler was the top finisher of the night with a score of 9.950. Mary Korlin-Downs was next-best with a 9.875 second place finish. Junior Abbie Nylin claimed third and added a score of 9.850. Loper placed fourth (9.825) and Montgomery came in at fifth (9.775). 

Floor
The Maroon and Gold put up their best event performance of the night on floor with a 49.425. Hooten and Ramler took a share of the crown after scoring a 9.925 to finish their night. Remlinger recorded a 9.900, a career-high, and was good for second place. Freshman Emily Koch scored a 9.850 and Loper wrapped up the Gophers scoring with a 9.825.

Up Next
Minnesota heads on the road to compete at Iowa on Saturday, February 6th. The meet will begin at 3:00pm and be broadcast live on ESPNU. This will be the second match-up between the two teams this season. The Gophers defeated the Hawkeyes by a score of 197.025-196.450 in the season-opening meet on January 15, 2021.
