MINNEAPOLIS -- The University of Minnesota women's cross country program took to the road for this week's action, with a segment of the program competing in Notre Dame's Joe Piane Invitational while the remaining women took on UW-Eau Claire's Blugold Invitational.

JOE PIANE INVITATIONAL RECAP

Led by 10th place and Big Ten Conference best finisher Bethany Hasz (16:31.6), the No. 7 Gopher women earned a fifth place team finish in the women's Blue Division 5k race, finishing with 192 team points.

Following Hasz were her sister Megan Hasz (15th) and teammates Abby Kohut-Jackson (31st), Anastasia Korzenowski (61st) and Jaycie Thomsen (75th) to round out the scoring for the Maroon and Gold.

While No. 6 Alabama's Mercy Chelangat secured the individual title in a time of 16:10.3, it was No. 2 NC State who took home the team title with 38 team points. No. 3 New Mexico finished second with 94 points, followed by No. 6 Alabama (147 points) and No. 8 Washington (189 points) in third and fourth.

Minnesota saw action in the women's Open Division 5k race as well, with Bit Klecker (18:07.5) taking the top spot for the Maroon & Gold in 25th. Libby Halbmaier (30th) and Liesl Paulsen (62nd) wrapped up the Gophers competition in the race with a career-best performance each, finishing in 18:15.1 and 18:49.0, respectively.

BLUGOLD INVITATIONAL RECAP

The Gopher women who weren't present at the Joe Piane Invitational saw their weekend's action at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire's Blugold Invitational, where Minnesota finished seventh with 206 points.

Maria Rickman headed the charge for the Maroon & Gold in Eau Claire, placing 11th in a career-best time of 23:04.9. Marta Kogucki (21st) and Taylor Krone (29th) took the second and third slots for the Gophers in career-best times of 23:25.6 and 23:37.6, respectively, and Sydney Kretlow (80th) and Ceci Howes (97th) wrapped up the scoring for Minnesota.

The team title in the women's 6k belonged to host UW-Eau-Claire, who finished with 70 points, and the individual title went to St. Benedict's Fiona Smith in a time of 21:37.2.

QUOTABLE

"It was kind of a 'B' day," said head coach Sarah Hopkins. "After a big weekend last weekend, back-to-back races aren't always the easiest thing, and today was a really good learning experience for Nuttycombe. This was very much like an NCAA field or a Nuttycombe field, and I think we learned a lot today about control and dealing with adversity. We did have some solid performances; Bethany and Megan ran great up front, we were all packed up there for the mile which is what we wanted, but we just got a little separated at the two-mile and lost a little focus in the middle. You have to go through that sometimes though. The Griak went about as well as it could have gone, so it's good to have a race sometimes that brings you back a bit and reminds you there's still work to be done. Just time for us to get back to work and tune up some of the things we learned from today."

Nine Gophers earned career-best performances on Friday, with all three leading Gophers in either main event at their respective invites claiming their own.
