MINNEAPOLIS – Minnesota sophomore Chris Nagy has been named to the 2021-22 U.S. National Junior Team, USA Swimming announced Monday.

A native of San Diego, Calif., Nagy earned his spot on the roster with his performance this past August at the 2021 Speedo Summer Championships West where he swam the 1500 free in a personal-best time of 15:32.52.

He's one of five swimmers on the roster within the event and one of 36 on the Men's National Junior Team.

"Chris making the National Junior Team is a testament to his hard work and commitment," Minnesota head coach Kelly Kremer said. "Chris and Associate Head Coach Jeff Kostoff work very well together, and Chris is quickly developing into one of the top distance swimmers in our conference."

Nagy competed in two events in Minnesota's season-opening victory at Purdue Friday, winning the 1000 free in a time of 9:22.83 and taking third in the 500 free at 4:36.46.

Last season as a freshman, Nagy took ninth in the 1650 free and 25th in the 500 free at the Big Ten Championships. He was named the team's "Hardest Worker" and "Most Improved" at the end-of-season team banquet.

The performance criteria to select the National Junior Team include the top two athletes in each individual Olympic event, as well as additional female athletes who have a World Ranking within, and including, the top 75 in an individual Olympic event and additional male athletes who have a World Ranking within, and including, the top 100 in an individual Olympic event that have ALSO achieved a time faster or equal to the established time standards.

Athletes will remain named to the National Junior Team until August 31, 2022.
