MINNEAPOLIS -- Liesl Paulsen and Emmet Anderson (UA) led the way for the University of Minnesota Gophers cross country programs Friday evening, as Minnesota hosted Jack's Twilight Run at Les Bolstad Golf Course. Anderson (UA) claimed the men's 6k crown in a time of 19:15, while Paulsen earned the women's title in a final time of 22:50.
"I thought today went really well," said head coach Sarah Hopkins. "It's always hard to come off of a race like Nuttycombe to a smaller meet like this and really put it out there, but I think we did a great job. All of the women were near their same times as Nuttycombe, which is really hard to do in this situation, so that was awesome. This is just great experience for all of our youngers runners. A year from now, this group that raced today will be getting ready for the Big Ten meet, so keeping their bodies used to the grind through the middle November is massive for making sure they're ready for the years to come."
Minnesota garnered the top-five spots on the women's side of the competition, with Erin Reidy following just behind Paulsen in second in a time of 23:02. Maria Rickman (23:14), Taylor Krone (23:34) and Ceci Howes (24:15) cleaned up the top spots for the Gophers, with the latter two doing so in personal-best fashion.
The Gophers also earned the top-two spots on the men's side, with Shuayb Hussein coming in second (19:30) behind Anderson.
NOTABLE
Jack's Twilight Run honors the late Minnesota equipment manager Jack Johnson. Johnson will always be a part of the Minnesota women's cross country and track programs. After serving as the Golden Gophers' equipment manager for over three decades, Johnson passed away in February 2006 after a battle with cancer.
