MINNEAPOLIS – The Minnesota women's and men's swimming and diving teams make their home debuts this weekend at Jean K. Freeman Aquatic Center.
The women's team gets things started Friday with a dual meet against Nebraska at 5 p.m. Saturday, both the men and the women play host to St. Thomas at noon. Admission to both meets is free. Prior to Saturday's matchup with St. Thomas, Minnesota will be holding a special Senior Day celebration.
The two matchups will be streaming on BTN+ with live scoring available on the Meet Mobile app; both services require a paid subscription.
The Gopher women and men are both 1-0 on the season.
The women opened the 2021-22 campaign on Oct. 8 with a 156-104 victory at Iowa. The Golden Gophers won the first 10 swimming events of the meet and grabbed the top two spots in eight of those 10. Sophomore Pyper Doo and junior Emma Lezer were each a part of three first-place finishes, while sophomore Indy Jongman captured two on her own.
Many of the program's underclassmen gained valuable experience as a combined 18 sophomores and freshmen made the trip to Iowa City as part of the Minnesota travel roster.
The men, meanwhile, began their year with a 178.5-121.5 victory at Purdue on Oct. 15. Senior Max McHugh, who posted two NCAA 'B' cuts, was a part of three victories, while juniors Desmon Sachtjen and Gavin Olson, and freshman Bar Soloveychik also won multiple events. Jake Butler claimed both the 1-meter and 3-meter boards with scores of 363.90 and 401.18, respectively, en route to winning Big Ten Diver of the Week.
The Gopher women defeated Nebraska last year in Minneapolis, 193-107. This year, the Cornhuskers are 2-0 on the season with victories over South Dakota State and Iowa. Nebraska has the reigning Big Ten Diver of the Week in Sara Troyer and the reigning Big Ten Freshman of the Week in Beatriz Padron.
St. Thomas' women are 2-0 this season thanks to wins against Augustana and Green Bay, while the St. Thomas men are 1-1 with a win over Augustana but loss to Green Bay. Saturday will mark the first swimming and diving competition between Minnesota and St. Thomas since the Tommies made the transition to Division I athletics this year.
