Minnesota Travels to Duluth for First Road Series

The Gophers hit the road for their first road series of the season as they battle Minn. Duluth Friday and Saturday at AMSOIL Arena.
MINNEAPOLIS – The No. 5/6 University of Minnesota women's hockey team is slated to travel to Duluth, Minn., for a Friday-Saturday series with No. 6/7 Minnesota Duluth this week. Puck drop is set for 6:00 p.m. CT Friday and 3:00 p.m. CT Saturday at AMSOIL Arena.
Last Time Out: Buckeyes Prevail in Opening Series
Minnesota opened its 25th season with a pair of losses against No. 3 Ohio State at home at Ridder Arena last weekend, falling 4-2 in game one and 4-1 in game two. Taylor Heise, Peyton Hemp and Amy Potomak all picked up their first goal of the season. Heise (1g-1a) and Emily Brown (2a) became the first Gophers to notch multi-point games this season. Lauren Bench stopped 22 shots in her first start of the year on Friday, while freshman Skylar Vetter stopped 27 in her first collegiate start on Saturday. The Gophers outshot the Buckeyes 65-56 in the series.
Newcomer Debuts
Six new Gophers made their Maroon and Gold debut last weekend at Ridder Arena. Emma Conner, Peyton Hemp, Ella Huber, Sadie Lindsay, Savannah Norcross, and Skylar Vetter all got their first action as Gophers. Peyton Hemp was the only freshman to record a point with her first career goal. Skylar Vetter made her first collegiate start, stopping 27 of 31 shots.
After Back-to-Back Losses
Minnesota has an excellent reputation for bouncing back after suffering back-to-back losses. The Gophers are 17-3-1 in program history in games following two straight losses in the same season. The Gophers have not lost three straight games in a single season since 2006-07.
Scouting Minnesota Duluth
Minnesota Duluth (1-1-0) began the season with a series split in Mankato, Minn. against the Mavericks. The Bulldogs, who finished second in the WCHA last season, won their season opener 7-0 on Friday, Oct. 1, but lost 4-2 on Saturday. UMD is an experienced group with 13 seniors/fifth-years. Clarkson transfer, and 2020 Patty Kazmaier Award winner, Elizabeth Giguere and three others notched four or more points in the Bulldogs' opening series.
In-State Rivalry
The Gophers and Bulldogs will face off against each other for the 103rd and 104th time with the Gophers leading the series 63-29-10. In the last 10 games between these two teams, the Gophers hold a 7-2-1 record and have won the last two meetings.
Scoring Milestones on the Horizon
Senior Taylor Heise is Minnesota's active career scoring leader with 96 career points (39g-57a) in 97 career games. Heise is closing in on 100 games played, 100 career points, 40 career goals, and 60 career assists. Redshirt senior Amy Potomak (33g-44a) and fifth-year Emily Brown (16g-57a) are approaching 80 career points. Senior Emily Oden (18g-44a) and fifth-year Olivia Knowles (14g-45a) are both nearing 70 career points.
25th Season
The 2021-22 season marks the 25th season of Gopher women's hockey. To celebrate the first quarter-century of Gopher women's hockey, Minnesota will wear special '25 seasons' patches on their jerseys among other celebrations throughout the season.
On the Road
The Gophers hit the road for the first time this season. Minnesota boasts an impressive resume on the road with a 390-95-34 record all-time away from Ridder Arena. In their last 20 games on the road, the Gophers are 14-5-1. AMSOIL Arena has been kind to the Maroon and Gold, as the Gophers are 16-3-3 in that venue since its opening in 2010.
Gophers in Beijing
Abbey Murphy, Grace Zumwinkle, Hannah Brandt, Dani Cameranesi, Megan Bozek, Amanda Kessel, Kelly Pannek, and Lee Stecklein were all named to the U.S. Women's National Team Olympic residency roster that will train and compete in preparations for the 2022 Olympic Winter Games in Beijing, China.
A total of 28 players will live and train in Blaine, Minn. in preparation for the winter games. Three matchups against Team Canada are scheduled for Oct. 22 in Allentown, Pa., Oct. 25 in Hartford, Conn. and Dec. 20 in St. Paul, Minn. Additional games are set to be announced.
Quest for Eighth National Title Continues
Minnesota has won seven national championships (2000, 2004, 2005, 2012, 2013, 2015, and 2016) and looks for a historic eighth title national crown in 2021-22.
