FIVE THINGS YOU NEED TO KNOW

1.
Minnesota and Iowa meet for the 115th time on Saturday with the Golden Gophers leading the all-time series, 62-50-2. The Gophers have more wins against the Hawkeyes than any other team in program history, while the 114 matchups rank second. Saturday marks the 87th battle for Floyd of Rosedale, a 15.5-inch high, 21-inch long bronze statue of a prized hog. First played for in 1935, the all-time series record for Floyd of Rosedale could not be more even as the two schools are deadlocked at 42-42-2.

2. The Golden Gophers have one of the strongest rush defenses in the country, ranking 14th nationally and third in the Big Ten by allowing 103.1 rushing yards per game this year. The national average for rushing yards per game through Nov. 6 is 164.0 yards per game; only two Gopher opponents have gone above 144 yards rushing this year and five have been held to 104 rushing yards or less. In fact, Minnesota had a two-game stretch of just 3 rush yards allowed (-19 at Colorado, 22 vs. Bowling Green). The -19 rushing yards allowed at Colorado on Sept. 18 are the fewest by any FBS team this year with the next fewest coming when Western Kentucky held FIU to -17 on Oct. 23. The next fewest among Power 5 teams came also on Oct. 23 when Wisconsin held Purdue to -13 on Oct. 23. Minnesota is fourth in the country in fewest opponent rush attempts (269), 14th in opponent rush yards (928), 17th in opponent rushing touchdowns (7) and 24th in opponent yards per carry (3.45).

3. Minnesota enters Saturday's game with the No. 8 total defense in the country, allowing just 298.9 yards per game. That's on pace to the be the best mark the program has had since 1977 when it allowed 292.8 yards per game. Not including the season opener, Minnesota has held six of its eight opponents this season below what their season total offense average was entering the contest. In addition, the Gophers have held seven of their last eight opponents below their rushing average entering the game, including four opponents more than 50 yards below their average. The Gophers are holding opponents to 18.3 points per game. The unit is looking to post a scoring defense below 20 points per game for the season for the first time since 1999 (16.3). The last time before that was 1977 (15.5).

4. Minnesota is 3-0 on the road this year, shutting out Colorado, 30-0, in Boulder on Sept. 18, winning at Purdue, 20-13, on Oct. 2 and beating Northwestern in Evanston, 41-14, on Oct. 30. It's the fourth time since 1961 that Minnesota has won its first three road games of a season, also winning its first three in 2019 and its first four in 2003 and 1999. The Golden Gophers are 12-3 in their last 15 games away from home, including bowl games, beginning with a 37-15 victory at Wisconsin on Nov. 24, 2018. During that stretch, only Ohio State (16-2) has a better mark away from home among Big Ten teams.

5. With his start against Maryland on Oct. 23, Minnesota redshirt senior offensive lineman Conner Olson set the Golden Gophers program record with his 52nd career start. He broke the mark of 51 set by former long snapper Payton Jordahl from 2015-18. Now at 54 starts, Olson should tie the Big Ten record of 55 starts by Ohio State's Billy Price (2014-17) Saturday at Iowa. Olson has started every Minnesota game since the beginning of the 2017 season, which is the entire P.J. Fleck era. Olson has started 25 games at left guard, 15 at center and 14 at right guard. Olson currently holds the fifth longest active starting streak in the country.
