MINNEAPOLIS -- The University of Minnesota women's golf team announced the addition of two student-athletes in Isabella McCauley and Luisamarina Mesones to the 2021 signing class, the first signing class under head coach Rhyll Brinsmead.
""We have been counting down the days to November 10th to announce my first signing class since we received these commitments," Brinsmead said. "Our focus this class was to bring in players that would make an immediate impact and we hit a home run with Isabella and Mariana. These two athletes alongside the foundation we have with the upperclassmen will elevate the depth of our roster and take us closer to our goals and vision we are firmly set on achieving."
Isabella McCauley - Inver Grove Heights, Minnesota
McCauley, a native of Inver Grove Heights, is a well-known phenom in the Minnesota golf scene. In 2021, the No.1 ranked high school girls' player in the state became the first woman to win the Minnesota Golf Champions tournament, an event that features the best players in Minnesota, both professional and amateur. She became the youngest Minnesotan to qualify for the U.S. Women's Open, barely missing the cut at The Olympic Club in San Francisco. The former high school state champion also reached the round of 32 at the U.S Girls Junior Championship during the summer of 2021. McCauley claimed a top-15 finish at the 2021 National Jr PGA competition and was also the 2020 and 2019 Jr PGA Section Champion.
"Isabella McCauley is the face of golf in the state of Minnesota, and the fact she chose to stay home is testament to her belief in the vision we have for the future of the program at the 'U'," Brinsmead said. "Her resume is extensive, highlighted with her qualifying for the U.S. Women's Open last summer. She is currently ranked 8th in the nation for the Class of 2022, and will be the most highly ranked athlete this program has ever signed."
"I chose the University of Minnesota because of the amazing team culture and coaches," McCauley said. "Being able to stay close to my family was a major factor as well."
Luisamariana Mesones - Trujillo, Peru
Mesones, a native of Trujillo, Peru, moved to Miami, Florida to continue her high school education and golf career. She currently resides in Miami and attends Saddlebrook Preparatory School. A member of the Peruvian National Team since 2015, Mesones has been the top ranked golfer in the Peruvian ranking for the past five years. She earned fifth place honors at the Latin American Amateur Championship in Chile and was the 2021 AJGA Ben An Junior Champion. Mesones won the U.S. Teens World Cup in 2018 and was also the best Central and South American golfer at the 2018 Junior Open in the United Kingdom.
"Mariana will also bring extensive domestic and international experience to the roster," Brinsmead said. "She is a dual citizen of the United States and Peru, and currently represents Peru on their national team. She was a highly touted recruit and again chose Minnesota based on the vision we have to elevate this program to a national level, alongside the world-class education she will receive. She has been ranked as high as 266 in the world rankings."
"I chose the University of Minnesota because I feel that every single person at the university is treated like family," Mesones said. "I also feel there are great opportunities that the university can give me, not only in the golf or academic perspective, but also in the life perspective."
