Gopher Women Punch Ticket to NCAAs

MINNEAPOLIS -- The No. 5 University of Minnesota women's cross country program is headed to the 2021 NCAA Championships later this month, after claiming an automatic bid with a first-place team finish at the 2021 NCAA Midwest Regional Championships Friday morning.
The No. 23 Minnesota men finished fourth in the team standings in the men's 10K race, and though they missed an automatic qualifying bid, they'll still have a shot at an at-large selection which will be determined tomorrow night. The selection show will be broadcast on NCAA.com, and will begin at 4:00 p.m. CT on Saturday, Nov. 13.
"Today was an awesome one for Minnesota," said head coach Sarah Hopkins. "I thought our women did exactly what we were looking for. They really established themselves early, got in a really good spot and just maintained and were where they needed to be the whole race. Everyone showed a ton of control, and we're really proud of the poise and composure they all showed. The top three were great, Anastasia had a really great run and I think Jaycie might have had the best race of the day, breaking into that top-20. Seeing her get back after having a little bit of a rough day at Big Tens was awesome.
"The men just absolutely battled. Khalid, Owen, Jack, Matt, they all just really stuck their noses up in there, kept with the breaks when they happened and were all near the top-30 which was awesome. Alec has obviously always been putting himself up towards the front and he had a great day as well. We just really battled the whole way through, and they all ran with so much heart. You could tell at 6K, 7K they were scratching and clawing for every last point they could get, and as a coach, that's all you can really ask for.
"The women obviously are sure to have another race next week, and we're keeping our fingers crossed, but the men are in a good position as well to see if we can get an at-large bid."
