Minnesota used a four-goal second period to take down the Huskies 6-2 in game one of this weekend's series.

Minneapolis, Minn. -- The No. 3 Golden Gopher women's hockey team surged past the Huskies 6-2 for their ninth straight victory on Friday night at Herb Brooks National Hockey Center.

Minnesota (10-3-0) cruised to a game one victory over St. Cloud State (4-6-1) behind a huge second period. The Gophers netted four goals in the middle frame to create a comfortable four-goal lead. Senior Taylor Heise kicked off the scoring for the third straight game. After her three-point performance on Friday, Heise now has 24 points (11g-13a) in 13 games. The Huskies outshot the Gophers in a 1-1 first period. Sophomore Audrey Wethington provided the spark and broke the tie with her fourth of the season just over six minutes into the middle frame. Oliva Knowles, with her first goal of the season, Abigail Boreen, and Taylor Heise followed suit and propelled the Gophers to a 5-1 lead after two. The Gophers outshot the Huskies 40-25 in Friday's contest.

Makayla Pahl got the start for the Maroon and Gold and earned her fifth win of the season. The junior stopped 23 of 25 shots to keep her perfect record alive. St. Cloud's Ahola stopped 34 of 40 shots in the loss.

Quotable
"A little bit of a slow start tonight, but responded with a great second period," said head coach Brad Frost. "We had some really nice goals and kept our feet moving. We started supporting the puck a little better and got some things to the net. Great win on the road and we're looking forward to tomorrow for the U.S. Hockey Hall of Fame Museum Face-Off Women's Face-Off Classic."

Notable
Freshman Tristana Tatur made her Minnesota debut. Makayla Pahl (5-0-0) earned her team-leading fifth win. Olivia Knowles scored her first goal of the season and tied a career high with three points. The Gophers defeated the Huskies for the 18th straight time.
