‘U’ Falls 4-3 in Overtime

11/5/2021 11:22:00 PM | Men's Hockey

Saturday's series finale is the 300th Border Battle meeting.

MADISON, Wis. – Sammy Walker and Brock Faber contributed a goal and an assist each for the No. 5 Gopher men's hockey program, but Wisconsin got the last laugh as Minnesota fell 4-3 in 3-on-3 overtime on Friday night.

Minnesota (5-4-0 overall, 2-1-0-0-0 Big Ten) also picked up a goal from Blake McLaughlin, who has points in seven of nine games this year and leads Minnesota with 12 points (three goals, nine assists.)

After a scoreless first period, the two Big Ten rivals combined for five goals in the second with Walker and McLaughlin giving the Gophers an early lead only for Wisconsin (4-5-0, 2-1-0-0-0) to bounce back with two goals of its own.

The 'U' ended the period with a one-goal lead in unusual fashion as Wisconsin put the puck in its own net on a delayed penalty to the Maroon & Gold. Faber ended up getting credit for the goal as the last Gopher to touch the puck.

The Badgers again found an equalizer in the third period and picked up the winner in 3-on-3 overtime.

Minnesota's 47 shots on goal were a season high as the Gophers held a 47-36 advantage on shots while going 2-for-3 on the penalty kill and 0-for-2 on the power play. Jack LaFontaine made 32 saves on 36 shots.

Coach's Comments
"We made too many mistakes tonight, and it cost us," Minnesota head coach Bob Motzko said. "There's nothing more that you can say."
