Gophers Net Pair of 'B' Cuts on Opening Night of Minnesota Invite

MINNEAPOLIS – Minnesota swimming and diving got the 2021 Minnesota Invite started Wednesday night with a pair of NCAA 'B' cuts for leadoff swimmers in the 800 free relay highlighting the action at Jean K. Freeman Aquatics Center.
Swimming the 800 free relay for the first time this year, junior Jordan McGinty and freshman Bar Soloveychik each led off for the 'A' relay teams for the women and men, respectively, and posted NCAA 'B' cuts for the 200 free in the process.
McGinty came in with a split of 1:46.86, which tied a personal best in the 200 free set last year at the Big Ten Championships. Joined by fellow junior Maggie Summit, freshman Hannah Cornish and sophomore Megan Van Berkom, the Gophers finished in a time of 7:10.95, good for eighth place.
Soloveychik was over a second faster than the 'B' cut and four seconds faster than his personal best set earlier this year, touching the wall at 1:35.17. The 'A' team finished eighth as Soloveychik, seniors Tom Donker and Cameron Kelley and sophomore James Freeman posted a time of 6:29.24.
The women's 'B' squad of senior Kate Sullivan, junior Rachel Butler, sophomore Indy Jongman and senior Kelli McCarthy came in with a time of 7:17.28, while the men's 'B' of sophomore Sawyer Grimes, freshman Chris Morris, junior Gavin Olson and freshman Jack Brown finished at 6:40.30.
The evening began with the 200 medley relay.
The #Gophers 'A' team of senior Emily Cook and juniors Grace Bennin, McGinty and Maggie Summit shaved nearly three seconds off the team's season best performance with a time of 1:38.29, tying for seventh among 19 teams.
The men followed suit and the 'A' team of sophomore Casey Stowe, senior Max McHugh, and sophomores Kaiser Neverman and Lucas Farrar took nearly two seconds off the Gophers' season best time in the 200 medley relay with a 1:25.56. That was good for eighth out of 18 teams.
Action continues tomorrow on day two of the Minnesota Invite with prelims starting at 10 a.m., diving at approximately 1 p.m. and finals scheduled to start at 6 p.m. On the docket for Thursday is the 500 free, 200 IM, 50 free, 400 medley relay, women's 1-meter diving and men's 3-meter diving.
