Minnesota Duluth used three third period goals to hand Minnesota its first loss when leading after two periods.
Minneapolis, Minn. -- The No. 3/4 Golden Gopher women's hockey team lost its first home game since Oct. 2 after relinquishing three third period goals to No. 7/9 Minnesota Duluth in a 3-2 defeat on Friday at Ridder Arena.
Minnesota's (13-5-1) home win streak comes to an end at four as Minnesota Duluth (9-6-0) notched three third period goals to secure the game one victory. The Gophers lit the lamp first for the 17th time this season when senior Catie Skaja went top-shelf for her seventh goal of the season just under halfway through the contest. Minnesota Duluth struck quickly in the third to grab the leads as Gabbie Hughes and Naomi Rogge each scored within the first five minutes. Amy Potomak knotted things up at the 8:53 mark after a nifty move in front of the net, but the deadlock would not last very long. Elizabeth Giguere tallied her ninth goal of the season less than a minute later to provide the visitors with the eventual game winning goal.
Lauren Bench became the second Gopher goaltender this season to start three straight games. The sixth-year goaltender made 19 saves in the loss. Duluth's Emma Soderberg stopped 29 of 31 shots to earn the victory.
Quotable
"We were in control, and then we weren't" said head coach Brad Frost. "We tied it up in the third to get a little momentum, but then gave another one up at the back door. If you make those little mistakes, they become big things – especially against their first line. There weren't a lot of second chances, either. That's a credit to both teams in how they were playing, but it was tough to get to the net tonight."
Notable
Minnesota falls to 13-1-0 when leading after two periods and to 4-3-0 at Ridder Arena. The Gophers allowed three third period goals for the first time this season.

The Gophers wrap up the series and first half of the season tomorrow at 3:30 pm at Ridder Arena.
