Gerads, Distance Runners Highlight Opening Day of Indoor Season

12/3/2021 4:34:00 PM | Men's Track & Field, Women's Track & Field

MINNEAPOLIS -- The Golden Gophers combined for six event titles as the University of Minnesota track & field team opened the 2022 indoor season at the SDSU Holiday Open and the Wooo Pig Classic on Friday. The highlight of the day came via Allison Gerads who posted her third career 4,000+ point pentathlon.

The senior won four of the five pentathlon events to post her third-best point total (4,037) in the pentathlon in her career. She posted personal bests in the 60m hurdles (8.72) and the high jump (1.77m - 5-9 3/4) to start off the competition and then followed up with solid marks in the shot put (11.82m - 38-9 1/2), long jump (5.93m - 19-5 1/2) and the 800m (2:33.45) to round out her 4,037 points. Gerads point total, based off last year's national indoor qualifiers, puts her in good position to make the 2022 NCAA Indoor Championships already after the first meet of the season.

Out of the four Gophers who competed at the Wooo Pig Classic it was Abby Kohut-Jackson who posted a 10-second personal best in the 3000m, taking fourth in a time of 9:10:04, a time that would qualify her at last year's NCAA Indoor Championships. Anastasia Korzenowski also competed in the 3000m, finishing eighth in a time of 9:34.85.

Rounding out the Wooo Pig Classic was Bethany and Megan Hasz in the 5000m, the sisters finished third and fourth, respectively, in times of 15:52.68 and 15:58.70. Both times, based on last year's NCAA Indoor Championship qualifiers, put them in good position to start the season to make a run at indoor nationals in 2022.

Back in Brookings, Minnesota picked up five more individual titles. In her first meet in the Maroon and Gold it was Zariyah Black who posted back-to-back top times in the meet to win the 60m hurdles, with her best time of 8.56 good enough for the title.

Janielle Josephs followed up Black's performance with a 400m winning time of 55:42 with Jayla Campbell (55.42) finishing in third and Dalayni Etienne (57.88) finishing fourth.

Big Ten Champion Amira Young started her 2022 season with a 200m victory in a time of 24.06 with Odell Frye taking third and Akilah Lewis finishing in fifth and Black finishing seventh in her second event of the day.

The Golden Gophers picked up a pair of victories in the field events in South Dakota. Freshman Nyalaam Jok tied for first in her debut with a high jump mark of 1.75m (5-8 3/4) while Tiera Robinson-Jones posting a new personal best in the long jump with a mark of 5.77m (18-11 1/4).

The Golden Gophers had a few unattached student-athletes compete at the SDSU Holiday Open. Finn Schirmer finished as the runner-up in the 60m hurdles with a time of 8.21 while also posting an 8.22 in the preliminary heat. Schirmer also competed in the 200m, finishing third in a time of 21.77. Ben Psicihulis posted a indoor personal best of 47.26 in the 400m to win the event.
