MINNEAPOLIS – Strong performances at last week's Minnesota Invite have resulted in honors from the Big Ten for Minnesota's Sarah Bacon and Max McHugh, the conference announced Wednesday.
Bacon won both diving events she competed in at the Invite. Thursday, she took down the facility record on the 1-meter with a score of 361.30. It was the best ever at the Jean K. Freeman Aquatics Center, the second best of her career and the fourth best overall in program history.
The fifth-year redshirt senior then blew the field away Friday with a 385.45 on the 3-meter, 48 points better than her next competitor.
It's the fifth time in her career that Bacon has been named the Big Ten Diver of the Week, previously earning the distinction twice as a sophomore in the 2017-18, once last year and earlier this season on Nov. 10.
She becomes the fourth Gopher to win the award at least five times since its inception in 1998-99. Only Maggie Keefer (15), Yu Zhou (14) and Kelci Bryant (7) have won the award more times in Gophers history.
McHugh qualified for the NCAA Championships in two events at the Invite.
He guaranteed himself a chance to repeat as national champion in the 100 breast with two 'A' cuts Friday. A senior, McHugh initially punched his ticket in the morning prelim sessions with a time of 51.18, bettering the 'A' qualifying standard of 51.59 by .41 seconds. He followed that in the championship heat with a mark of 51.07, the second fastest time in the country this year as he finished as the event's runner-up in an exciting showdown. The top three finishers posted the top three times in the nation this year.
The highlight for the men's team Saturday was McHugh's automatic qualifying mark in the 200 breast, one of two events where he is the defending national champion. Facing a loaded field, he touched the wall in 1:51.27, the third fastest time in the country this year.
Wednesday's honor is the sixth of McHugh's career, extending his own school record. He was named Big Ten Swimmer of the Week three times as a sophomore and twice last year as a junior.
The Big Ten honors this week bring the total to five for the swimming and diving program as a whole this year. Hannah Cornish was tabbed Freshman of the Week on Nov. 3 and Jake Butler was named Big Ten Diver of the Week on Oct. 20.
