No. 2 Minnesota suffered a 3-2 loss to No. 4 Ohio State at Ridder Arena Saturday afternoon.
MINNEAPOLIS -- The No. 2 Golden Gopher women's hockey team gave up three second-period goals on the way to a 3-2 loss to No. 4 Ohio State at Ridder Arena on Saturday afternoon.
Minnesota (9-7-1, 9-7-1 WCHA) jumped out to an early lead, getting on the board just 1:10 into the game on Abigail Boreen's eighth goal of the season. Grace Zumwinkle then scored her team-leading 12th goal of the year to give the Maroon & Gold a two-goal lead at the first intermission.
However, Ohio State (11-5-0, 11-5-0 WCHA) erupted for three second-period goals. Liz Schepers put SU on the board at the 48-second mark before Jennifer Gardiner and Tatum Skaggs scored back-to-back goals at 11:23 and 12:16 to take the lead, and the Gophers were unable to find the equalizer.
Lauren Bench made 20 saves while OSU got 23 saves from Andrea Braendli. Minnesota had the advantage in shots on goal, 25-23, including a 9-5 advantage in the third period. Both teams were scoreless on the power play with the Gophers going 0-for-5 on the power play but 2-for-2 on the penalty kill.
Quotable
"We played a couple good periods here tonight -- and one really bad one," head coach Brad Frost said. "That's pretty much the story of the game. Great start coming out of the gates there, getting up 2-0, terrible second period to give up three, and then we played well in the third again. We had some glorious chances there in the third, and whether it was hitting the post or whiffing on an open net or just not finding a way to will the puck in the net, it was a disappointing result and we'll have to find a way to regroup and get ready for next weekend."
Notable
Minnesota recognized its five seniors in a pre-game ceremony, celebrating goaltender Lauren Bench, defense Emily Brown, defense Olivia Knowles, forward Taylor Wente, and forward Grace Zumwinkle.
Up Next
Minnesota concludes the regular season with a road series against Bemidji State next Friday, Feb. 19 and Saturday, Feb. 20.
