A tough loss for Gophers is highlighted by Troost and Lobak's upset win.
ANN ARBOR, Mich. - The University of Minnesota faltered 6-1 Sunday afternoon against the No. 15 Michigan Wolverines, though the Gophers did see one bright spot today as Siim Troost and Vlad Lobak secured a huge ranked victory in doubles play.
The loss drops the Maroon & Gold to 0-2 on the season after being swept in the opening weekend, while Michigan jumps to 2-1 on the year after Sunday's victory.
Doubles Play
Doubles play started on a bit of a sour note, as Sebastian Vile and Jackson Allen fell in their match by a score of 6-1. Bodin Zarkovic and Daniel Martin answered back in a big way by defeating the pairing of Ondrej Styler and Nick Beaty by a score of 6-4.
This put the doubles point in the hands of Siim Troost and Vlad Lobak, who faced a tall task in the nation's No. 2 pairing in Andrew Fenty and Mattias Siimar. After a back-and-forth match, the doubles point came down to the match tiebreaker, where Troost and Lobak were able to get it done and secure the victory, 7-6.
Singles Play
After dropping the doubles point, the Wolverines dominated the rest of the way, sweeping all six singles matches en route to a 6-1 match win.
Although his efforts resulted in a loss, Jackson Allen showed heart in his match at the No.1 spot, pushing No. 14 singles player Andrew Fenty to three sets before eventually falling by a score of 2-6, 6-2, 3-6. Daniel Martin also pushed his match to three sets, but fell 6-2, 3-6, 3-6.
Notable:
With Sunday's doubles victory, Siim Troost and Vlad Lobak accomplished the biggest doubles upset win recorded in school history (ranked wins have been recorded since the 2005-2006 season).
Before Sunday, the biggest doubles upset win belonged to Mathieu Froment and Jack Hamburg, when they defeated No. 4 pairing of Ralf Steinbach and Kevin Metka at the B1G Tournament on April 25, 2014.
What's Next?
The Gophers will come back home for a three-game homestretch from Feb. 28-Mar. 6, where they will host Northwestern, Illinois and Wisconsin.
