Gopher Softball Splits Season-Opening Doubleheader

The University of Minnesota softball team opened the 2021 season with a doubleheader split over Maryland, today in Leesburg, Fla. With the win, the Golden Gophers are 1-1 overall and in Big Ten play.
On the day, MacKenzie Denson went 2-4 wiht two hits and a run, while Natalie DenHartog was 2-5 with a double.
Minnesota is back in play tomorrow at 3:15 p.m. and 6 p.m. CT, when it plays Ohio State in another doubleheader.
Game One Recap
Minnesota earned a 2-1 win in extra innings to open the 2021 season. Minnesota scored a run in the fifth and another in the eighth for the win.
With the win, it marked the first career win for head coach Piper Ritter. She took over as head coach of the Golden Gophers in May of 2020.
Natalie DenHartog went 2-4 with the extra-inning RBI and a double, while Ali Lindner went 1-2 with an RBI in the fifth. Sydney Strelow went 1-4 and scored a run, while Megan Dray went 1-3.
Amber Fiser collected her first win of the season. She pitched all eight innings, allowed four hits and an unearned run, nine strikeouts and three walks.
In the top of the fifth, Strelow bunted her way onto first and steals second. With two outs, MacKenzie Denson walked. Lindner hit one up the middle and scored Strelow from second.
Maryland tied the game in the bottom of the seventh to force extra innings. Maryland opened up the bottom of the seventh when Maryland's Caitlyn Koenig reached on a Gopher error. After pinch runner Jojo McRae came in, she stole second and advanced to third on a hit from Campbell Kline. A play at the plate from Katelyn Kemmetmueller to Sara Kinch avoided one run, but Maryland scored its run on a stolen base to tie the game.
With MaKenna Partain at second, Kemmetmueller provided a sac bunt to move her to third. DenHartog provided a RBI single to put the Gophers up, 2-1. Maryland attempted another comeback when it had two on to start the inning, but the Gophers worked their way out of the jam for the season's first win.
Game Two Recap
Minnesota dropped a 2-1 contest to Maryland in game two.
Partain went 1-4, while Denson was 2-3 with a run scored. Kemmetmueller had the Gopher RBI. Autumn Pease picked up the loss as she pitched all seven innings, allowed two earned runs, had eight strikeouts, allowed four hits and two walks.
Maryland scored a run in the fourth and another in the sixth to solidify a 2-1 victory in the second game of the doubleheader.
Kemmetmueller plated Denson for the Gophers' lone run. Maryland, however, responded in the top of the fourth when the Terps scored a run on a ground out to tie the game. The Terps scored their second run of the game on a wild pitch.
Minnesota attempted to tie the game in the bottom of the seventh when Partain hit a triple with two outs, but the Gophers were unable to capitalize.
