Gopher men's gymnasts Shane Wiskus, Mike Moran, and Crew Bold competed in the event finals portion of the 2021 Winter Cup in Indianapolis, Ind. Sunday evening. All three had qualified for the event finals from their performances in the opening day of the senior men's competition on Friday.
Following a fourth place finish in Friday's all-around competition, senior captain Shane Wiskus put together a huge performance in the event finals portion of the Winter Cup, finishing on the podium of five of the six events he competed in on the weekend and earning the highest two day all-around score of the weekend for all competitors (165.200).
Junior Mike Moran capped off his Winter Cup weekend by finishing with the 11th highest two day all-around score of the weekend (152.150). This is a big jump from Moran's performance at last year's Winter Cup, where he finished with a two day all-around score of 128.250 to finish in 17th.
While sophomore Crew Bold didn't compete for the all-around title Friday, he was able to take full advantage of his qualification into Sunday's event finals in all four of his events. Bold would finish just off the podium in fourth while competing for the high bar event title, while also earning top 20 finishes in still rings and parallel bars.
"Our Gophers did another solid job out there again tonight," head coach Mike Burns said. "Shane stepped up his game another notch from two nights ago, Mike did another 6 for 6 performance in the all-around, and Crew just missed a spot on the awards stand on high bar with another great set on his signature event. While we weren't as crisp everywhere as we wanted to be, these guys represented the Maroon & Gold extremely well on the national stage."
Shane Wiskus
Competing in his final Winter Cup with the Gophers, Wiskus started off his day hot by scoring a 14.550 on vault to tie himself for third in the event competition (28.400). Wiskus then went on to score 13.700 on parallel bars, which was enough for him to earn silver in the event with a two day score of 27.750. Another silver was in Wiskus' hands following a 14.100 score on high bar, putting his two day total in the event at 27.100. With a score of 14.550 on floor exercise today, Wiskus captured his lone first place event finish with his two day total in the event reaching 28.550. Wiskus capped off his day on still rings, where the senior's score of 14.000 and two day total of 28.000 tied him for third and earned him his fifth and final podium of the weekend.
Mike Moran
Not only did Moran improve upon his two day all-around score from last year's Winter Cup, but he also saw solid event results across the board for Sunday's competition. Moran started his day with a 14.000 on vault, tying him for seventh in the event (28.200). On high bar Moran found himself finishing in 15th with a two day total of 23.950 and scoring an 11.900 today. Moran had his highest event finish of the weekend on floor, where his score of 13.950 on Sunday tied him for sixth in the event (27.800). Moran also finished top 20 on parallel bars (19th), pommel horse (20th) and still rings (18th) in Sunday's event finals.
Crew Bold
The young sophomore's best event performance of the weekend came on high bar, with his two day total of 27.000 and Sunday score of 13.550 earning him fourth. On parallel bars, Bold improved on his score in the event from Friday with a 13.000 to finish 16th overall (24.550). Bold then moved to pommel horse, where his two day total of 20.850 put him at 23rd in the field. To finish his day off, Bold was able to lock down a 13th place finish on still rings thanks to a two day score of 26.250 in the event and with a score of 12.950 in the event on Sunday.
