Gophers Come From Behind to Win Over No. 13 Purdue

2/5/2021 9:12:00 PM | Volleyball

The No. 6 University of Minnesota volleyball team trailed 2-1 to come from behind and defeat No. 13 Purdue, 3-2, tonight in West Lafayette, Ind. Minnesota lost the first set, 20-25, won the second 25-23, lost the third, 24-26, won the fourth 25-21 and won the fifth, 15-7. Minnesota is now 5-0 on the season and in Big Ten play.

Stephanie Samedy dominated the court when she had a career-best 28 kills and 26 digs. Adanna Rollins added 17 kills and 27 digs, while Taylor Landfair had 14 kills. Regan Pittman hit .538 when she connected seven kills on 13 attempts and added six blocks. Melani Shaffmaster produced a career-high 60 assists, and added a crucial ace and a block during the match.

As a team, Minnesota hit .276 for the match, including a point of .429 in the fifth. The Gophers had 11 kills and two errors in the fifth set. The Gophers also had 72 kills, 108 digs and 10 blocks. Purdue hit .201, had 65 kills, 14 aces, four blocks and 103 digs.

Notables
-Stephanie Samedy not only produced career bests in kills and digs, she also produced the first 20-kill, 20-dig performance in over a decade. The last time a Gopher had that performance dates back to Katherine Harms in 2011 against Washington during the NCAA tournament (Dec. 3, 2011).
-Tonight marked the first match Minnesota lost a set and the first time the Gophers played in a five-set match this season. Minnesota is now 1-0 in five-set matches and 1-0 against ranked opponents.

Quotable
"It was an important night for us on a number of levels," Hugh McCutcheon said. "Purdue is a tough team, they are well coached and well prepared. It was also the first time we'd seen this lineup with Grace Cleveland, and she's a big part of what they do. On our side of the net, it also wasn't going so smoothly, especially in serve receive, which has been a pretty steady part of our game. Coming back and winning a tough fourth set and being in control in the fifth are really important lessons, especially on the road. I'm really proud of the way we were able to regroup, refocus and play some good volleyball down the stretch. It was a big win."

Next Up
Minnesota plays Purdue again tomorrow night when the two teams battle again at 4 p.m. CT. The match will be streamed on BTN +.
