Minnesota Finishes Big Ten Match Play with Pair of Draws

MINNEAPOLIS – The Minnesota men's golf team halved both of its matches Saturday at the Big Ten Match Play Championship in Palm Coast, Fla. The Golden Gophers earned 2-2-1 draws against both Penn State and Purdue.

Three different Gophers produced match wins Saturday with junior Will Grevlos finishing 2-0 on the day.

Grevlos began the day with a 2&1 victory over Penn State's James Allen. Grevlos dropped the opening hole, No. 12, but needed just three holes to take a lead he would not relinquish. With Grevlos leading by as many as three, Allen cut into the lead and was down one with two holes to play, but a birdie from Grevlos on No. 10 sealed the victory. Grevlos then defeated Purdue's Peyton Snoeberger in the afternoon session. Grevlos dominated the match, taking a five-hole lead after just nine holes on his way to a 3&2 victory.

Fellow junior Lincoln Johnson rallied for a 1 Up victory over Penn State's Lou Olsakovsky. The match started on the 11th hole, and it was either tied or had Olsakovsky in front until No. 8 when a par from Johnson gave him his first lead. The match was tied again with one hole to play, but Johnson eagled the par-5 10th to grab the win. Johnson then lost to Purdue's Cole Bradley in the afternoon, 3&2.

After losing his first match of the day 2 Up, freshman Ben Warian secured a 1 Up victory over Purdue's Herman Sekne. Down one after two holes, Warian won the next two and held the lead throughout the rest of the match, leading by as many as four on three separate occasions.

Senior Thomas Longbella halved his match with Penn State's Ryan Davis. Much like Johnson's matchup against Olsakovsky, Longbella found himself tied or trailing for much of the contest. Down two holes with three to play, Longbella recorded a par on No. 7 to get within one. After each golfer birdied the eighth hole, Longbella halved the match as his par on No. 9 bested Davis' bogey. Longbella lost to Purdue's Joe Weiler in the afternoon, 5&3.

Sophomore Connor Glynn was defeated 4&2 against Penn State but he came back to halve his match with Purdue's Andrew Farraye. Glynn was behind for much of the match and trailed by two holes with four to play, but he staged a comeback by winning the next two holes thank to a par on No. 6 and a birdie on No. 7. He and Farraye then each recorded pars on the final two holes.

Minnesota now has just over a month before its next tournament as the Golden Gophers will take part in the Spartan Collegiate at Sea Island in Sea Island, Ga., March 8-9.
