MINNEAPOLIS – The Minnesota men's golf team kicks off the bulk of its spring schedule Monday as it travels to Sea Island, Ga., for the Spartan Collegiate at Sea Island. It's the first of five tournaments for the Golden Gophers over a six-week period.

Hosted by Michigan State, the two-day event will take place at Sea Island Resort, specifically the Plantation Course, which is playing as a par-72, 7,060 yard course. The tournament consists of 36 holes on Monday with the final 18 on Tuesday. Both days will begin with shotgun starts at 7 a.m. CT.

Minnesota is one of 16 teams in the field, including one of seven from the Big Ten along with Indiana, Iowa, Michigan State, Northwestern, Ohio State and Rutgers. Four of the teams are receiving votes in the latest Bushnell/Golfweek Coaches Poll: Iowa, Indiana, Northwestern and Notre Dame.

Representing Minnesota at the tournament this weekend will be seniors Angus Flanagan and Thomas Longbella, junior Lincoln Johnson, sophomore Connor Glynn and freshman Ben Warian.

Flanagan will be making his season debut for Minnesota. The 2019-20 All-American competed at the Jones Cup Invitational in early February, tying for 22nd. Most recently, he won the Genesis Invitational Collegiate Showcase, earning him a spot in the PGA Tour's Genesis Invitational in mid-February. Flanagan missed the cut, but now has two PGA Tour events under his belt, along with the 3M Open in the summer of 2020.

The other four golfers heading to Sea Island all competed at the Big Ten Match Play Championships in early February, where the Gophers went 0-1-2. Of the four, Warian and Johnson were the top finishers with 1-2-0 records, while Longbella was 0-1-2 and Glynn posted a 0-2-1 mark.

With last spring's season cancelled due to COVID-19, the Gophers will be competing in their first non-match play tournament since the Tavistock Intercollegiate in October of 2019.

Flanagan led the squad in the fall of 2019 with an average of 69.33, while Glynn (71.33) and Longbella (71.75) ranked second and third, respectively.
