Gophers Open Season at Heroes Ladies Intercollegiate
2/6/2021 9:30:00āÆAM | Women's Golf
The 2021 spring season starts on Sunday for the Minnesota women's golf team as they head to Sarasota, Fla. for the Heroes Ladies Intercollegiate. The three day, 54-hole stroke play tournament will be held at the par-72, 6281-yard Founders Golf Club.Ā
"The anticipation heading into this event is at an all time high," head coach Rhyll Brinsmead said. "As my first event at the helm of the Gopher program plus the close to year long hiatus of college golf, we couldn't be more excited to be here in Florida competing. We'd be remiss not to thank the B1G Conference and the Minnesota administration for all the hard work behind the scene to allow us to play a spring season. Our theme of gratitude will lead us this weekend and I am feeling really confident in the lineup we have. We've got a clean slate to build on this spring and I'm excited to see what this team can do!"
The tournament will be one of the top women's collegiate golf events in the country, featuring 15 women's NCAA Division I golf teams from the Big Ten, Big 12, SEC and ACC conferences. Joining the Gophers from the Big Ten are Illinois, Northwestern and Purdue, the host of the tournament. Augusta, Clemson Georgia, Iowa State, North Carolina State, Notre Dame, Oklahoma State, Ole Miss, Tennessee, Texas Tech and Virginia Tech will also participate in addition to the B1G competitors.Ā Ā
Minnesota will have a starting lineup of sophomore Grace Curran, senior Grace Kellar, sophomore Annabelle Ackroyd, freshman Kira Wolf and sophomore Emma Carpenter in the field.Ā
"Grace Curran has shown she has worked very hard since lockdown and is ready to compete," Brinsmead said. "She won our spring training trip tournament shooting 74-72. I believe she has the talent to be one of the best athletes in the B1G conference and the nation. Beyond that we have talent in all the other seven athletes on the roster. It will be very competitive week to week on who earns travel spots."
Curran was fourth on the team in scoring average (76.20) after playing in seven tournaments in 2019-20. Curran competed in numerous tournaments over the summer and captured wins at the Golfweek Midwest Collegiate and Minnesota Golf Association Women's Match Play Championship.
Kellar finished fifth for scoring average with a 77.12 in 2019-20 and also excelled in the classroom, being named a Big Ten Distinguished Scholar.
Ackroyd finished third on the team in scoring average (76.18) during the 2019-20 season and won her third straight Alberta U19 Championship this summer.
Carpenter saw action in four tournaments last season and ended with a 77.89 average. Her best finish came in a tie for 35th at the Juli Inkster Invitational (77-75-72--224, +8).
Wolf will make her debut for the Maroon and Gold.Ā The Mattoon, Ill. native is a four-time state tournament qualifier in Illinois, finishing in the top-25 each time including a sixth-place finish her freshman year. On the Mid-American Junior Golf Tour circuit, Wolf has earned eight top-10s, including medalist honors at the 2017 MAJGT University of Illinois Open. This past summer, Wolf shot her fourth career hole-in-one.
