SARASOTA, Fla. - Sophomore Grace Curran turned in the low Gopher round of the day as the Minnesota women's golf team opened their season at the Heroes Ladies Intercollegiate at the Founder's Club.Ā
Notable
The start of Sunday's round was delayed by three hours due to early-morning storms, forcing the shift of the format from tee times to a 10:00 a.m. CT (11:00 a.m. ET) shotgun start.
Curran fired a 2-over-par 74 to tie for 24th after the first rotation of action. The New Lenox, Ill. native recorded back-to-back birdies to solidify her score early and added one more for a total of three on the day.Ā
Right behind Curran is fellow sophomore Emma Carpenter, who is tied for 53rd at 6-over-par. Senior Grace Kellar and sophomore Annabelle Ackroyd are tied for 72nd with a 85 while freshman Kira Wolf shot a 90, good for 74th.Ā
Quotable
"The overall scores do not reflect the steps we took today in becoming the type of team we are going to be," head coach Rhyll Brinsmead said. "In a field this deep and a course this challenging, there is no room for error or self-doubt and, unfortunately, we collectively struggled there. We won't dwell on this result as we've got two more rounds, and we believe we are capable of much more than we saw today. As a coaching staff, we will continue to drive home the importance of self-belief and execution on the course. Grace Curran played a great round today. I know she is frustrated with her finishes, but she was excellent today and we're excited to see her contend over the next two days."
