Gophers Open Rowing Season This Weekend
3/10/2021 2:07:00 PM | Rowing
MINNEAPOLIS – The Gopher rowing program is set to begin the 2021 season this weekend at Louisville's Cardinal Invitational in Oak Ridge, Tenn. The two-day event begins on Saturday, March 13 and concludes on Sunday, March 14.
READY TO GET BACK IN THE WATER
The Maroon & Gold have waited more than a year to get back in the water with the 2021 campaign scheduled to begin 366 days after the Big Ten and the NCAA announced that all remaining competition for the 2019-20 season was being halted due to COVID-19 public health concerns on March 12, 2020. Additionally, Minnesota will start the season at the Cardinal Invitational in Oak Ridge, Tenn., the same competition and location the Gophers were at when the team was called home due to the cancellation of last year's season.
COACH'S COMMENTS
Minnesota Head Coach Alicea Strodel enters her second season with the program after an abbreviated first season with the Maroon & Gold. GopherSports.com caught up with Coach Strodel to talk about the start of the season.
On anticipation of the season…
We are all very, very excited. By Saturday, it will have been over a year since we competed together, so there is a lot of anticipation for this moment from the coaching staff and from all of the women who had their season cut short last year.
On competing during the pandemic…
Both our administration and the Big Ten have done a great job in setting up protocols, so everyone feels safe in our training environment. Just having that piece in place has allowed women to come in and train and be their best selves as they prepare for the season.
GOPHERS IN THE NATIONAL RANKINGS
The University of Minnesota earned nine votes in the Division I Preseason 2021 Pocock/CRCA Poll presented by USRowing, which was released on Wednesday, March 3.
THREE TO LEAD IN 2021
Three Maroon & Gold student-athletes will guide the Gophers this season as captains with Meade Avery (Lyme, N.H.), Lindsay Eliasen (Chanhassen, Minn.) and Gabby Mullally (Neenah, Wis.) selected to lead the program through a unique season.
'U' SET FOR SIX COMPETITIONS IN 2021
Minnesota announced its competition schedule for the 2021 rowing season earlier this year with the Maroon & Gold prepared to race in six competitions. The Gophers start the year at the Cardinal Invitational in Oak Ridge, Tenn. (March 13-14), followed by a five-team competition at Ohio State in Columbus, Ohio (April 3). Minnesota then heads to the inaugural B1G Invitational in Cincinnati, Ohio (April 17-18) before competing in a dual at Iowa (April 25) and the Dale England Cup in Bloomington, Ind. (May 1). The Big Ten Championships are currently scheduled to be held in Devil's Lake, Wis. (May 16).
UP NEXT: COLUMBUS COMPETITION
After this weekend's competition in Tennessee, the Gophers will return to action next month in Columbus, Ohio on Saturday, April 3 as Ohio State hosts Minnesota, Michigan, Virginia and Duke.
