Gophers Rally, Defeat Illinois in Five Sets

Minnesota hosts Illini at 5 p.m. on Saturday on Fox9+

After a two-week hiatus, the University of Minnesota earned a 3-2 win over Illinois, tonight at Maturi Pavilion. Minnesota won the first 25-20, lost the second and third 15-25, 20-25, won the fourth 25-20 and won the fifth, 15-12. With the win, the Golden Gophers improve to 10-1 overall and in Big Ten play. The Illini dropped to 2-9 overall and in Big Ten play. The game marked Minnesota's first contest since it competed on Feb. 21 at Nebraska.

Stephanie Samedy had 18 kills and 11 digs for a double-double. Adanna Rollins followed with 14 kills and a double-double with 12 digs. Taylor Landfair added 10 kills. Melani Shaffmaster had 42 assists, three aces, six kills and completed the double-double with 11 digs. CC McGraw had 25 digs.

Minnesota will play Illinois again tomorrow at 5 p.m. The match will be shown on FOX 9+ locally and streamed on BTN +.


Set Recap:
First Set: The Gophers held a 15-11 lead only to have Illinois come back and pull within one at 16-15. The Gophers however Minnesota went on a 6-2 run to take a 22-17 lead off a Shaffmaster kill from Pittman. Illinois closed the gap to 22-20 as Minnesota called a timeout. The Gophers finished off the set with a kill from Landfair, an ace by Shaffmaster and an Illini attack error for the 25-20 final.

Second Set: Illinois took the second set, 25-15. The Illini opened with an 8-3 lead and later took a 15-10 lead as Minnesota called a timeout. The Illini added to their lead with a 7-2 and a 23-14 lead. The Illini finished off the set with an ace and a kill to tie the match, 1-1.

Third Set: The Illini took a 2-1 lead off a 25-20 set win as they hit .348 in the third. Tied at 7-7, Illinois took a 15-12 lead off a kill. A kill by Rollins brought the Gophers within one at 16-17. Minnesota also came within one at 18-19 on a block by Airi Miyabe and and Taylor Landfair. Despite a kill by Samedy at 20-22, the Illini added three-straight kills for the set win.

Fourth Set: Minnesota held Illinois to hit just .050 en route to a 25-20 set win. Minnesota took a 10-7 lead off a Samedy kill. Minnesota also went up 14-8 off a Samedy kill as well as 16-12. A block by Miyabe and Landfair put the Gophers up, 19-13, while Miyabe and Samedy combined for one at 22-14. Minnesota took a 23-18 lead off an Illini attack error, while the Gophers finished off the set with a Rollins/Pittman block for set point.

Fifth Set: Minnesota solidified the win with a 15-11 fifth set victory. Trailing 1-4, Minnesota took a 7-5 lead off a Shaffmaster kill, which forced Illinois to call a timeout. Tied at 8-8, Minnesota called a timeout. The Gophers came out of the break and later took an 11-9 lead off an ace from Shaffmaster. Rollins added a kill for a 13-11 lead. The Gophers gained the 14th and 15th points off Illini errors.
