Gophers Earn a Sweep Over Illinois

Regan Pittman produced 13 blocks as the No. 5 University of Minnesota volleyball program earned a 3-0 win over Illinois, tonight at Maturi Pavilion. With the win, the Golden Gophers improve to 11-1 overall and in Big Ten play. The Illini drop to 2-10 this season.
Stephanie Samedy tied a match-best 11 kills when she hit .303, had an ace and nine digs. Adanna Rollins provided nine kills, while Pittman had five. Melani Shaffmaster had 24 assists and completed the double-double with 12 digs and five blocks. As a team, Minnesota hit .216 to Illinois' .024. They also outblocked the Illini 15-5.

Regan Pittman completed 13 blocks in just three sets played. That set a school record for the blocks in three-set match at 13. Twice within the past four matches, Pittman has registered double-digit blocks. She had 14 against Nebraska on Feb. 19, which tied a school record for blocks in a single match.

Minnesota plays Wisconsin in a home-and-home series next week. The Golden Gophers travel to Madison, Wis., Thursday, March 18. Match time is set for 7 p.m. The Gophers and Badgers will then play March 21, also at 7 p.m. Both matches will be televised on Big Ten Network.
First Set: Minnesota capitalized on seven blocks to earn a 25-21 set win. Rollins added four kills in the set. Illinois jumped out to an early 12-7 lead as the Gophers called a timeout. Minnesota responded and later tied the set on a block from Pittman and Shaffmaster. The teams then tied through the 19-19 point before Minnesota went on a 6-2 run for the 25-21 win.
Second Set: Minnesota took the second set with a 25-23 win. The Gophers opened the second with a 12-6 lead as Illinois called a timeout. The Illini, however, tied the set at 14-14 and later took an 18-16 lead off a kill. The Gophers, however, rallied and tied the set at 22-22 on a Rollins kill. The Gophers finished off the set with points off an Illini error, a Rollins kill and a Samedy kill to go up, 2-0 in the match.
Third Set: The Gophers closed out the match with a 25-13 win for the sweep. After the two teams were tied at 10-10, Minnesota went on 14-2 run to finish off the Illini. A Rollins kill put the Gophers up, 16-13, while Samedy added back-to-back kills for a 20-13 lead. Minnesota finished off the set with a kill by Shaffmaster, a block by Pittman/Samedy, a kill by Pittman, a block by Rollins/Pittman and an Illinois attack error.
