HEADING INTO THE WEEKEND
• Due to COVID-19 restrictions and injuries, the University of Minnesota volleyball program will postpone its March 18 match at Wisconsin. The decision was based on guidance from our medical staff and student-athletes available to participate.
• The University of Minnesota was back on the court last week after a two-week hiatus as the Golden Gophers defeated Illinois in back-to-back matches. Minnesota won the first match in five sets, while it swept the Illini Saturday.
• Regan Pittman has been named the Big Ten's Defensive Player of the Week announced Monday by the league office. In two matches against Illinois this past weekend, Pittman averaged 2.63 blocks per set. On Friday, Pittman added eight blocks. She followed on Saturday with a 13-block performance in just three sets. Those 13 blocks were the most in a three-set match in school history. On the season, she averages 1.46 blocks per set and ranks 13th nationally. In the past four matches, Pittman has averaged 2.40 blocks per set. She also had a career-high 14 against Nebraska on Feb. 19.
• Stephanie Samedy has produced 20-plus kills in four matches this season. The senior opposite hitter had 28 and 20 against Purdue (2/5-6), 23 against Penn State (2/13) and 27 against Nebraska (2/19). She narrowly had another against Penn State on Feb. 14 when she registered 19. On the season, Samedy averages 4.37 kills per set.
• Stephanie Samedy currently ranks 13th among NCAA active leaders in career kills (1,391) and 30th in kills per set (3.6). Regan Pittman ranks 15th among NCAA active leaders in career hitting percentage (.355), sixth in blocks per set (1.21) and fourth in total blocks (464).
• Regan Pittman and Stephanie Samedy has been named two of 30 candidates up for the Senior CLASS Award, announced today by the organization. To be eligible for the award, a student-athlete must be classified as an NCAA Division I senior and have notable achievements in four areas of excellence: community, classroom, character and competition. The complete list of candidates follows this release. An acronym for Celebrating Loyalty and Achievement for Staying in School®, the Senior CLASS Award focuses on the total student-athlete and encourages students to use their platform in athletics to make a positive impact as leaders in their communities.
