Minnesota Drops Road Meet Against No. 2 Michigan

3/14/2021 3:26:00 PM | Men's Gymnastics

The Gopher men's gymnastics team fell to the second ranked Michigan Wolverines by a score of 412.800-384.400 Sunday afternoon in Ann Arbor. Michigan were able to capture all six individual and team event titles in the matchup.

Notable

Sophomore Victor Perez saw himself earn career high scores in all three events he competed in on the day, as he put together solid performances for the team on floor (13.300), parallel bars (13.100), and high bar (13.300).

Quotable

"With Shane Wiskus, David Pochinka, and Mike Moran out of the lineup your other guys need to step up and fill the void," head coach Mike Burns said. "Definitely some shining moments out there today, but also a couple of rough routines that were momentum killers. We have a full week of preparation until our final home meet against Illinois a week from Monday. We'll need to heal up a bit and address a couple of routines in terms of construction to improve our hit potential."

All-Around

No Gophers competed for the all-around title on Sunday, and the all-around title was captured by Michigan's Jacob Moore, who put up a score of 81.900.

Floor Exercise

Minnesota saw a slow start on floor, and senior Colton Dee led the way for the Maroon & Gold with a score of 13.850 earning him a third place individual finish in the event. Sophomore Victor Perez saw his first action in the event this season by posting a career high 13.300.

The Gophers saw two debuts on pommels on the day, with freshman Evan Ng making his collegiate debut for Minnesota in the event with a 12.600. Junior Matt Sullivan also was able to make his season debut for the Gophers (12.250) after recovering from surgery earlier this year.

MICH: 68.150, UMN: 61.250

Still Rings

On still rings, senior captain Henry Meeker led the way for the Maroon & Gold with a career high of 13.500. Crew Bold also was able to put up a respectable 13.250 in the event, which had him finish seventh in the event overall.

Vault

Minnesota saw their highest team event score on vault on Sunday, with former vault All-American Ben Eyles scoring a new season high of 14.550 in the event to finish third overall. Both Colton Dee (13.950) and Crew Bold (13.900) helped round out the Gophers' score, but the squad still came up short of the Wolverines in the event.

Parallel Bars

Leading the way for the Gophers on parallel bars was sophomore Victor Perez, whose career high 13.100 had him finish fifth overall. Donte McKinney finished right behind Perez in the event standings with a 12.700 that put him sixth.

High Bar

A trio of sophomores closed out the day with a bang for the Gophers, as Crew Bold and Donte McKinney both set season high scores of 13.900 to tie for second place in the event standings. Victor Perez was also able to set his third personal best of the day with a score of 13.300.

The Road Ahead

The Gophers will now return home to close out their season at Maturi Pavilion on Monday, Mar. 22 at 4:00 p.m. CST. The meet is set to be televised on Big Ten Network, and is the last meet of the Maroon & Gold's season before Big Ten Championships on Apr. 3 in Nebraska.
