Hasz Named Big Ten Women's Cross Country Athlete of the Year

The 2020 Big Ten champion led the Gophers with an eighth-place finish at the NCAA Cross Country Championships.
MINNEAPOLIS -- Senior distance runner Bethany Hasz, the 2020 Big Ten champion and a First Team All-American during the 2020-21 cross country season, has been chosen as the 2020-21 Big Ten Women's Cross Country Athlete of the Year through a vote of the Big Ten coaches, the conference announced Thursday.
A day after being named the 2021 Big Ten Women's Indoor Track Athlete of the Year, Hasz has received the same distinction for the cross country season. She won this year's B1G cross country title, clocking a career-best time of 20:13.2 over the six kilometer course in Shelbyville, Ind., and helping Minnesota to a runner-up team finish. The unanimous choice as the Big Ten Women's Cross Country Athlete of the Year, Hasz is the second Golden Gopher to claim the honor and the first since Eileen Donaghy in 1987.
Hasz followed up her B1G win with an eighth-place finish at the NCAA Cross Country Championships, pacing the Maroon & Gold to a fifth-place team finish -- the best NCAA finish in program history for the Gopher women. Her eighth-place finish is the second-highest by a Gopher at the NCAA Championships in program history, and her PR of 20:13.2 ranks third on Minnesota's all-time list behind only Stephanie Price (19:55.50) and Megan Duwell (20:06.90).
