Bacon Wins Big, Sets History on Day Two of NCAA Championships

3/18/2021 10:40:00 PM | Women's Swimming & Diving

MINNEAPOLIS - Historic. Monumental. Inspirational. Golden. Just four of the many words one could use to describe what redshirt-senior Sarah Bacon has accomplished in her time as a Minnesota Gopher.

The most recent of Bacon's career collegiate accolades came Thursday evening, as the Indianapolis, Ind. native claimed her third consecutive NCAA Championships title in the one-meter springboard diving event with a six-dive score of 357.20. This came a week after Bacon swept both of the springboard events at the NCAA Zone D Diving Championships.

How impressive are three straight NCAA Championship titles in the same event? Well, it is unprecedented. She is the only woman in Minnesota history to ever do so. In fact, not only is she the only woman to ever win three straight, but she's the first woman in Minnesota history to win three individual NCAA titles, period. Impressive does not even begin to explain it.

Historically, only two other Minnesota student-athletes have managed the three-peat. The last came from 1991-93, when John Roethlisberger brought home the men's gymnastics all-around title over three straight seasons. Before Roethlisberger, Fortune Gordien won the men's outdoor discus from 1946-48. Again, just an incredibly impressive accomplishment.

With Bacon's third NCAA title locked down, the Gophers have now won seven of the 21 springboard events over the past 11 years. That is a whooping 33 percent of the total available titles that Minnesota has laid claim to over the past decade. Contributing to that mind boggling total along with Bacon are two-time NCAA Champion and Olympian Kelci Bryant (2010 - 3m, 2011 - 1m) and two-time NCAA Champion Yu Zhou (2015, 2017 - 3m), creating yet another exclusive group of Minnesota greats to which Bacon belongs.

Competing alongside Bacon in her first ever NCAA appearance was freshman Megan Phillip, who finished the event 49th overall (221.90).

With day two of the Championships now in the rearview, Minnesota sits 21st overall in the team standings with 20 total points.

Bacon will return to the Greensboro Aquatic Center tomorrow to compete in the three-meter springboard for her fourth career NCAA title. Also representing the Maroon and Gold tomorrow in her NCAA debut will be freshman Megan Van Berkom, who qualified to compete in the 400 individual medley.
