MINNEAPOLIS - With day one of the 2021 men's Big Ten Conference Championships wrapped up, the Gophers currently reside seventh with 162 points.
Opening the night for the Maroon and Gold was the relay team of Desmon Sachtjen, Max McHugh, Kaiser Neverman and Lucas Farrar, who placed eighth overall in the 200 medley relay, registering a Minnesota season best time of 1:25.40.
What may be most impressive on the Gophers time was McHugh's 50 breast relay split, where the junior Sturgeon Bay, Wis. native touched in a time of 22.40, the fastest 200 medley relay breast split in history. He'll likely take on his second breaststroke event for the Maroon and Gold in the 400 medley relay on Wednesday night.
The 800 freestyle relay produced similar results for the Gophers, as the team of Cameron Kelley, Tom Donker, James Freeman and Sawyer Grimes touched eighth overall (6:24.74) in the second and final relay event of the night. Kelley recorded the first lifetime best of the Championships as well, as his lead-off split of 1:36.55 reflects more than a full second drop from his previous lifetime best in the 200 freestyle.
All diving scores from last week's diving championships have already been included into the team totals to this point through the Championships, helping boost the Gophers to their seventh place spot.
