WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW
In an effort to help maintain social distancing protocols, the swimming and diving portions of the Big Ten Championships are being held separately this season. The Diving Championships have already taken place, as they were held from Feb. 25-27 at the Morgan J. Burke Aquatic Center at Purdue University. The swimmers will be heading to Columbus, Ohio from March 2-6 for the swimming portion of the championships, which are being held at the McCorkle Aquatic Pavilion at Ohio State University.
"It's been exactly one year since this group of men has had an opportunity to compete in a Championship setting," said head coach Kelly Kremer. "We are thankful to the B1G and our administration for making this happen, and we are looking forward to getting to Columbus and racing!"

LAST TIME OUT
The last time the Gopher swimmers saw competitive water was on Feb. 6, when the Maroon and Gold defeated their Big Ten rival Iowa Hawkeyes in a dual meet, 153-147. Of the 16 events, Minnesota filled 38 of the top-four spots en route to the win, including six event wins and three podium sweeps in both diving events and the 1000 free.
DIVING CHAMPIONSHIPS
The Minnesota divers saw the water much more recently, competing at the three-day 2021 Big Ten Diving Championships from Feb. 25-27 at Purdue University.
Day one saw the men take on the one-meter springboard, an event in which all four competing Gophers scored for Minnesota. Leading the group was sophomore Jake Butler, whose prelim score of 310.95 advanced him to the afternoon's consolation final where he would ultimately finish 16th overall. Senior Maxim Royzen, junior Ryan Phillip and senior Duncan Lester all cracked the top-24 in the preliminary session as well, finishing 17th (280.40), 21st (267.40) and 23rd (259.85), respectively.
Day two saw even better results for Minnesota, as two Gophers advanced from the preliminary round on the three-meter. This time, Butler moved onto the night's 'A' final as his preliminary score cracked the top-eight with 383.10 points, while Lester would advance to the afternoon's consolation final on the tails of a 15th place prelim finish. Lester would improve three spots in the following round to record the best Big Ten finish of his career at 12th.
Butler improved on his prelim seed in the night's final as well, moving from sixth to fifth with a finals score of 409.30, the best finish by any male Gopher at the Championships this season. Like the day prior, all four Gophers finished 24th or better to score team points for Minnesota, with Royzen and Phillip placing 18th (320.80) and 24th (284.30), respectively.
No Gopher competed in any diving events on day three of the Big Ten Diving Championships, as Minnesota had one confirmed COVID-19 case in its Tier 1 contingent, and out of an abundance of caution, withheld all Minnesota divers from competing on the final day of competition.
TITLE DEFENSE
The only Gopher to enter the 2021 Big Ten Championships as a defending Champion will be junior Max McHugh, who took the crown in the 100 breast last year in Bloomington as well as a bronze-medal finish in the 200 breast.
After originally winning the preliminary session of the 100 in a time of 50.77, McHugh doubled the distance between himself and the nearest competitor in the finals round, finishing 0.70 seconds faster than the second place finisher in a pool-record and NCAA 'A' Cut time of 50.67, the fastest of any collegiate swimmer that season. What may be even more impressive, however, are the strides McHugh has made this year in the same event, having already topped his 2020 season best twice in both of the Gophers meets.
The first of such feats came in the form of a 50.63 split versus Big Ten rivals Purdue and Wisconsin on Jan. 23, which coincidentally marked the top time in the nation this season as well. McHugh then improved upon said split the following week as he touched the wall in a remarkable 50.55, reflecting his current season best which sits a mere 0.25 seconds above the team record which he himself holds (50.30).
McHugh initially missed the top seed in the 200 at the 2020 championships by only 0.05 seconds, before ultimately finishing third in the finals session in an NCAA 'A' Cut time of 1:51.80. Including this finish and his pair of silver medal races in the same events from 2019, McHugh has earned four medals at the conference finals through his first two years as a Gopher, and he'll look to keep that streak alive this week.
FRESHMAN CONTRIBUTIONS
The Gophers signed a massive freshman class prior to the 2021 season, who have proven to be immensely important thus far through the year. Front runners Sawyer Grimes and Kaiser Neverman each have an event win under their belts already, and either can be found as the top name among the Gophers' top times in nearly 60 percent of the collegiate swimming events this season (see below). The latter has even notched himself an NCAA 'B' cut this year, touching the wall in 1:46.59 in the 200 fly during the Jan. 23 tri-dual.
These two, as well as a number of others including Chris Nagy, Nathan Kim, William Christenson and James Freeman, should make a definite impact at this year's Big Ten Championships, and even possibly at the national championships in late March.
BIG TEN HISTORY
From 1989-2010, the Gophers recorded 21 team finishes at the Big Ten Championships, including seven titles and no finishes worse than third. Since that mind-boggling stretch ended with a fourth place finish in 2011, Minnesota has only finished worse than sixth once, and will look to get back to their dominant ways in 2021.
HEARING FROM SENIOR ASSOCIATE HEAD COACH TERRY GANLEY
On her expectations for the team at this year's Big Ten Championships...
"Our men are prepared and ready to compete in the best conference in the country! We will give our best performances with acknowledgement and gratitude for the efforts made by so many to make this Championships a reality."
HEARING FROM REDSHIRT-JUNIOR CAPTAIN TOM DONKER
On his expectations for the team at this year's Big Ten Championships...
"We're all coming into this knowing it'll be like nothing we have experienced before, and with that we are heading into it with no expectations. If we can learn anything from last year, it's that anything can happen, so we are all focussing on having fun, swimming fast and making memories with each other."
On who he's excited to watch competeā¦
"Honestly, I'm excited to see everyone race. It's been a long time since I was last at a Big Ten Championship with everyone, so I'm just going to watch and take in as much as I can."
HEARING FROM JUNIOR MAX MCHUGH
On his expectations for the team at this year's Big Ten Championshipsā¦
"My only expectation is for everybody to give it their all this week. I think everyone is grateful to have a championship meet with some of the fastest teams in the country. I'm really excited to see the freshman class compete and what they can do. They are the future of this program, and I think this year will be a great opportunity for them to see fast swimming and become accustomed to the format of the meet."
On who he's excited to watch competeā¦
"I'm really looking forward to watching everyone compete and be aggressive in their swims. The Big Ten is such a fast conference and should provide a great racing environment for everyone."
Ā
HEARING FROM FRESHMAN KAISER NEVERMAN
On his emotions heading into his first Big Ten Championshipsā¦
"I'm very excited to swim at my first Big Tens! Nervous, but definitely excited. It'll be a great experience to learn and grow as a college swimmer, so I'm excited to go and do the best I can while also enjoying it and having fun!"
On who he's excited to watch compete...
"I'm especially excited to watch my fellow mid-distance guys swim, since I've been training with them all year. I'm also really excited to watch all the upperclassmen. I've gotten to watch them swim as Gophers for the past two years, and now I'll get to be a part of that team as well!"

Grimes recorded top-two finishes in all three of his races during the event, including winning the 1000 free for the second week in a row. Grimes' award brought the Gophers total up to a whopping three on the season, reflecting exactly 50 percent of the total possible.
