Gophers Come Up Short in Series Finale vs. Nebraska

3/28/2021 5:46:00 PM | Baseball

MINNEAPOLIS – The University of Minnesota baseball team came up short in Sunday's series finale against Nebraska by a final score of 10-2.

Nebraska got the scoring started in the first inning, taking a 1-0 lead on a Cam Chick RBI groundout to second base. The Huskers extended their lead to 5-0 in the third, producing a four-run inning highlighted by a two-run single off the bat of Luke Roskam.

Another run came in to score for Nebraska in the sixth on a fielding error. In the seventh, Nebraska plated a trio of runs on a pair of bases loaded walks followed by a bases loaded hit-by-pitch.

Down 9-0, the Gophers showed life in the eighth inning. Batting with the bases loaded, Andrew Wilhite delivered a two-run single to right field, scoring Brett Bateman and Chase Stanke to make the score 9-2.

Nebraska added one final run in the eighth on a Roskam RBI single to center. With the score at 10-2, there proved to be no further scoring by either team from that point forward.

Minnesota starting pitcher Trent Schoeberl received the loss, pitching three innings with five runs (one earned) allowed on five hits and two walks while striking out three.

Husker starter Shay Schanaman earned the win, firing 7 1/3 frames of two-run ball on three hits and one walk while striking out ten.

Appearing out of the bullpen, Josh Culliver provided three quality innings of relief for Minnesota. Culliver allowed just one unearned run on one hit, striking out three.

Wilhite was the lone Gopher to collect multiple hits in the loss, finishing 2-for-4 with two RBI. Stanke and Bateman were the only other Minnesota players to register hits, with Bateman's eighth inning double marking the first hit in the freshman's career.

With the loss, Minnesota falls to 3-12 on the season.

Quotable
"We knew the loss of player development time over the last year would be a factor, but it appears to be more impactful than I expected. I need to find a way to change the mindset of our team due to the tough start to the season," head coach John Anderson said. "In eight of our 15 games, we have given up at least one run in the first inning and have been losing momentum. We have not been consistent on the mound or on offense all year and that makes it hard to have better results on the scoreboard."

Notable
With his eighth inning double, Bateman recorded his first collegiate hit in the game.

Culliver provided three quality innings of relief for Minnesota, allowing just one unearned run on one hit, striking out three.

Up Next
Minnesota returns home for a three-game series against Michigan State from April 2-4. The action represents the Gophers' first official play at Siebert Field since the 2019 campaign.
