MINNEAPOLIS – Minnesota men's golf finished in 16th place as the Spartan Collegiate at Sea Island concluded Tuesday in Sea Island, Ga.
Playing at the Plantation Course at Sea Island Resort, the Golden Gophers dropped one spot from their 15th place finish following Monday's first two rounds. The Gophers had their lowest round of the tournament with an eight-over par 296, leaving them +36 at 900 (305-299-296). That put Minnesota 16th in the 16-team field, while Iowa captured the team crown with a -13, 851.
Senior Angus Flanagan was the Gophers' top finisher, coming in 30th following a 1-over 73 Tuesday. Starting on the 14th hole, Flanagan birdied three of the first five holes to climb into a tie for 10th place, however he had a stretch of four bogeys in a six-hole span between Nos. 3-8 to fall back from contention. He was two-over for the tournament with a 218 (76-69-73).
Junior Lincoln Johnson tied for 63rd with a 10-over 226, though his round of 73 Tuesday was his best of the tournament. He was two-over through his first five holes after starting on No. 15, but he recorded birdies on No. 2 and No. 4 to get back to even. A bogey and double bogey followed, but he battled back with consecutive birdies before another birdie on No. 12 again got him back to even, though a bogey on his penultimate hole left him in the black.
Two Gophers tied for 66th as senior Thomas Longbella and sophomore Connor Glynn each finished with a +12 228.
Longbella's 2-over 74 in Round 3 was his best of the tournament. He started on the 16th hole and had a birdie on No. 18 to get under par, but he was +4 over the next three holes. He birdied No. 4 but immediately followed with a bogey. His best stretch came with three consecutive birdies between holes 7-9 to get back to even, though he was +2 over his final five holes.
Glynn's final round saw him open with a bogey on No. 15 before rattling off nine pars in a row. A birdie on No. 7 put him back at even-par, though a double bogey on No. 8 came next. He had another birdie on the 10th, but he was +3 over the last four holes.
Freshman Ben Warian finished his first collegiate stroke play tournament with a career-low round of 76. He started on No. 16 and got a birdie on No. 18 to reach the red. He had all pars between holes 1-9, save for a double bogey on No. 1 and bogey at the sixth. He was two-over for his final six holes, though he did get a second birdie on No. 12.
Minnesota will return to the course March 25-27 at The Goodwin in Palo Alto, Calif.
