Flanagan Leads Through First Day of Boilermaker Invitational
4/10/2021 8:09:00 PM | Men's Golf
MINNEAPOLIS – Minnesota senior Angus Flanagan is the leader through the first day of competition at the Boilermaker Invitational Saturday in West Lafayette, Ind. Round two was halted due to darkness Saturday night and will be completed Sunday morning prior to the tournament's final round.
Flanagan sits 6-under-par through 36 holes, shooting a 4-under 68 in the opening round and backing it up with a 2-under 70 in round two. The 68 matches his own score in the second round of The Goodwin for the lowest by a Gopher this year, while his score to par of 4-under is the lowest this year on the team.
That puts Flanagan one shot ahead of Indiana's Clay Merchant and two shots clear of the Hoosiers' Mitch Davis.
As a team, Minnesota is in fifth place at 3-under-par with a 573. The Golden Gophers' 7-under 281 in the opening round was their lowest score to par this season, 11 shots ahead of the +4 280 they shot in round two of The Goodwin. They followed it with a 4-over 292 to trail tournament-leader Indiana by seven shots. Kent State, which still has two golfers left to complete round two, is tied with Purdue for second place at 6-under, while No. 4 Illinois is fourth at 5-under.
Starting on the back nine, Flanagan opened with a par and then rattled off three straight birdies. Three holes later he had another birdie to get to 4-under. That was followed with a bogey on No. 17 but he made the turn three shots under par. He carried that score to the seventh hole where he tallied his fifth birdie of the day to finish 4-under. His second round saw him go 3-under on the back nine again thanks to birdies on holes 12, 16 and 17. He was +1 on the front to record finish the round 2-under at 138.
Junior Lincoln Johnson and freshman Ben Warian are tied for 20th at even-par with dueling rounds of 144.
Johnson began his day with a birdie on No. 13 but was 2-over at the turn after a pair of bogeys. After another bogey on No. 1, he battled back to even-par with two birdies in a row before finishing his day with one last bogey on his final hole for a 1-over 73. Round two saw Johnson card six birdies, tying Thomas Longbella (third round, Spartan Collegiate at Sea Island) for the most by a Gopher in a single round this year. Johnson had three birdies to cancel out three bogeys on his front nine, before three more birdies on the front helped counteract a double bogey on No. 2. His second-round 71 was his first round under par this year and it matched his lowest round of the spring.
Coming off a career-low round of 73 in the final round of last weekend's Hoosier Invitational, Warian bettered that number with an opening-round 70. He jumped out of the gate with three birdies in his first seven holes, then got as low as 5-under as he made the turn and netted birdies on the holes No. 1 and 2. He ended his round with bogeys on three of the final five holes, but it was still good for his first round under par in his career. Warian followed it with a 2-over 74 in round two, highlighted by a pair of birdies.
Like Warian, senior Thomas Longbella also logged his best round of the season with a 2-under 70 to begin the day. He birdied three of his first eight holes, but fell back to even par. He finished strong, however, with additional birdies on holes 4 and 6 to get back in the red. A 5-over 77 was his score in round two, including three birdies, putting him tied for 36th as play ended Saturday.
Sophomore Harrison Arnold is tied for 62nd with an 8-over 152. His 74 in the opening round, which included a pair of birdies over his final four holes, matched his opening round of the Hoosier Invitational for his best round of the season. He then fired a 78 in round two that included the first eagle of the season for Minnesota. That came on the par-5, 534-yard fourth hole, while he also had four birdies during his round.
Round three of the Boilermaker Invitational will take place following the conclusion of round two.
