MINNEAPOLIS – Minnesota second baseman Zack Raabe was named to the USA Baseball Golden Spikes Award Midseason Watch List on Wednesday afternoon. Raabe is one of 45 players across the nation to make the Midseason Watch List and one of just two players in the Big Ten Conference to make the cut.

Dating back to the 1978 season, the Golden Spikes Award is awarded annually to the top amateur baseball player in the country.

Across 69 at bats, Raabe is slashing .406/.500/.681 with four home runs, one triple, five doubles, 15 runs, seven RBI and one stolen base. The Gopher second baseman owns a perfect 1.000 fielding percentage across 71 defensive chances so far this season.

At present, Raabe leads the Big Ten in nearly every slash category while also ranking among the best hitters in the country. Raabe's .406 batting average and .500 on-base percentage both lead the Big Ten, with his batting average sitting .23 points higher than the next-closest batter. Raabe also ranks seventh in hits (28), seventh in slugging percentage, 10th in walks (13) and 12th in total bases (47). Nationally, Raabe ranks 36th in batting average and tied for 33rd in on-base percentage.

Having entered the season as a Second Team Preseason All-American, Raabe's 2021 campaign comes on the heels of a breakout 2020 season in which he led the nation with 31 hits. As a sophomore last season, Raabe posted a .463/.526/.612 batting line with one home run, seven doubles, 16 runs and 10 RBI. That performance earned Raabe 2020 Second Team All-America honors from Collegiate Baseball.

Raabe is the first Gopher to be added to the Golden Spikes Watch List since Max Meyer was named to the 2020 Preseason Watch List just over 14 months ago and the first Minnesota player to be named to the Midseason Watch List in particular since Meyer in 2019.

The Golden Spikes Award Midseason Watch List represents a rolling list, which means additional players who have not made the current cut are still eligible to play their way into consideration for the award. Semifinalists for the 43rd Golden Spikes Award will be announced on June 8, with finalists being voted on and officially selected on June 24. The winner will then be voted upon later that same day.

Raabe and the Gophers will be back in action at home this upcoming weekend, as they host No. 25 Michigan for a three-game series at Siebert Field from April 16-18. Game one will air on ESPNU at 3 p.m. CT on Friday, while games two and three will stream live on BTN+ at 1 p.m. CT on Saturday and Sunday, respectively.
